You, the customer, are solely responsible
for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup
of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this
procedure.
WinBook will NOT be held responsible
for any data loss incurred during this process.
You will need the following things to
reinstall on this machine:
Deleting the Windows Directory
- Put the boot disk into the A Drive
and power up the laptop.
- This will bring up a menu with 7 options
and an A:\ prompt.
- Type in 7 press Enter. It will
ask you to press a key to continue, hit the Enter key.
- When the computer asks you to confirm
deletion, type Y and then hit the Enter key. This will
delete the Windows directory (It will take approximately 10-15 minutes).
Note: After deleting Windows it will bring back the same menu
with 7 options and an A:\ prompt.
Reinstalling Windows 95
- Reboot the computer with the boot
disk in the floppy drive.
- You should be at an A:\ Prompt after
the menu.
- Choose option 6 (Reinstall
Windows 95 onto a WinBook hard drive) and then press Enter. This will
setup your hard drive to reinstall Windows 95. You will see a number
of files being copied.
- After a few seconds you will get a
message "Please insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM." After this
message, open your CD-ROM tray and insert you CD labeled Microsoft Windows
95 with USB Support (Part No. X03-50348) and wait about 5 seconds and
then press Enter.
- This will copy the Windows 95 setup
files onto your hard drive and ask you to press Enter to perform a routine
check on your system. When you see this message, go ahead and press
the Enter key.
- Windows 95 Setup will begin by starting
the Scandisk program. NOTE: You may get an error message "Problem
Found", select "Fix It."
- When Scandisk is finished, the Software
License Agreement will appear. If you agree to the terms of the License,
click the Yes button. Note: If you do not agree, and click
No, Windows Setup will inform you that it cannot continue.
- If you continue, Windows Setup will
then show you the three steps to install Windows 95. Click on the Next
button when you have finished reading these steps.
- Setup will ask you what directory
you would like to install windows to. Choose the default option, C:\WINDOWS.
Then click on the Next button.
- Next, Setup will ask you what type
of installation you would like to do. We suggest Typical. If you are
an advanced user you may divert here. These instructions will continue
with the Typical option.
- Windows Setup will then ask you to
enter your Product ID. Your product ID is located on the Certificate
of Authenticity, on the Introducing Windows 95 booklet. The Product
ID is in the form: #####-OEM-#######-#####. When you enter the Product
ID into the box, you do not need to enter the dashes (-) or the OEM.
These have already been entered for you. When you are done click on
the Next button.
- You will now be asked for your Name
and Company Name. The company name is optional. When you have finished,
click on the Next button.
- Widows Setup will then ask you if
you have installed a Network Adapter or Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture
card. Do not select either of these options. Click the Next
button, and windows will begin analyzing your computer to see what devices
you have installed. This process can take up to 15 minutes to complete.
- After this is done, Setup will ask
you which components you want to install. We suggest choosing the default
option (Install the most common components (recommended)). If you are
an advanced user, you may choose one of the other options. These instructions
assume, you have chosen to install the most common components. Note:
After installing Windows 95 you have the option of installing additional
components, or removing installed components, at any time. You can do
this by using the Windows Setup tab of the Add/Remove Programs tool
in the Control Panel.
- Setup will now ask you if you want
to make a Startup disk. There is no need to create one at this point.
You already have one! The disk labeled "XLi Boot Disk Windows
95" that came with your computer is a Startup disk. It is the same
one that you used to start this installation of Windows 95. To continue
without making one, choose No and then click the Next
button.
- Windows will start Copying files to
your computer's hard drive. Note: If you get a Version Conflict dialog
box during the installation, select Yes.
- After your computer is done copying
files, you will see the Finishing Setup screen. Click the Finish
button.
- If any floppy disks or CDs are
in your computer remove them now and then click on the OK button.
- Your computer will reboot and begin
configuring components. Windows will then ask you what time zone youre
in. Choose your current time zone from the list on the right side of
the window. (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana is selected
by default. When you have the correct time zone selected, click on the
Apply button, then click the OK button.
- Next Windows will begin the procedure
for setting up a printer. For the purposes of this WinBook Tech Article
we will continue by clicking on the Cancel button. Note: Follow
the instructions that came with your printer for information on how
to set it up in Windows 95. For more information on installing printers,
contact your printer manufacturer.
- You have now finished setting up Windows
95 on your WinBook. Continue by clicking on the OK button. Your
computer will then reboot to gather more information.
Reinstalling Internet Explorer
- After Windows reboots, You will be
prompted to install Internet Explorer 4.0, click on the Next
button to continue. Internet Explorer setup will then ask you what language
you want to use. Follow the default (English) and click on the Next
button.
- Setup will then state that the following
components are being installed:
- Internet Explorer Common Components
- Multimedia Components
- Web Authoring
- Additional Active X Controls
- Setup will then start automatically
start configuring the system. After the installation setup will prompt
you to close all programs restart, click on OK.
Updating the Universal Serial Bus
- Put the Windows 95 CD-ROM in
the CD-ROM drive.
- Click on the Start button and
choose Run.
- Type in D:\other\updates\usb\usbsupp.exe
and press Enter.
- Windows will ask you if you want to
install Microsoft USB Supplement. Click Yes.
- Read the License Agreement, if you
agree click Yes to continue.
- Windows will copy some files. When
it is done the Microsoft USB Supplement window will appear and
notify that it is complete. Windows will then want to restart. Click
on OK.
- Once your machine reboots back into
Windows 95, click on the Start button and choose Run.
- Type in D:\other\updates\usb\usbupd2.exe
and press Enter (Windows will copy some files).
- You have now finished updating the
Universal Serial Bus on your WinBook. Restart your computer by clicking
on Start, select Shut Down, highlight Restart the Computer,
and click on the OK button.
Updating the Hard Drive controller
and Power Management Controller
- Once your machine has rebooted, click
on the Start button and choose Run.
- Type in c:\drivers\piix4\setup.exe
and press enter.
- Read, then close or exit
the License agreement.
- Click on Yes to agree to the
terms of the agreement.
- Click on the Next button in
the Intel 82371xB INF Update Installer.
- Windows will copy some files then
prompt you to restart the computer. Go ahead and click on the Yes
button to restart the computer.
- As it loads into Windows 95 it will
find a series of new hardware devices. On the forth device, the Windows
Device Driver Wizard will stop for the Intel 8237AB PCI Bus master
IDE Controller.
- Click on the Next button
and Windows will search and find an updated driver.
- Click on the Finish button
to complete the installation.
- The computer will continue to load
windows, as it does it will find two more devices and set them up, then
it will prompt you to restart. Click on Yes to restart the computer.
- As Windows restarts it will find two
more devices and install them, and then will complete loading.
- Once you are back in Windows 95 and
you are at your desktop, click on the Start button, go up to
Settings, and click on Control Panel. From here double
click on the System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties.
Click on the Device Manager tab.
- Locate the Hard Disk Controller in
Device Manager and click on the "+" sign to the left. Below
that you will see Intel 82371 AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller.
Click on it to highlight it and then click on the Properties
button.
- Click on the Settings tab.
Under Dual IDE channel settings, you should see Default.
- Click on the arrow to the right of
the box and choose Only Primary IDE Channel Enabled.
- Click on OK and then click
on OK again.
- You will be prompted to restart the
computer. Click on Yes.
Enabling PCMCIA Support
- Click on the Start Button,
move up to Settings, and click on Control Panel. From
here double click on the System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties.
Click on the Device Manager tab.
- The PCMCIA Socket should have three
devices listed under it. Two Texas Instruments PCI-1131 CardBus Controllers
and a PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller. All three will have red
Xs on them.
- Highlight the PCIC or compatible PCMCIA
controller and click remove.
- Windows will ask you to confirm deletion.
Click OK.
- Highlight the first Texas Instruments
PCI-11131 CardBus controller and click on the properties button.
- Remove the check in Disable in
this hardware profile and click OK. This will bring up the
PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard. No should be selected. Click Next.
Again No should be selected. Click on the Next button
and then click on Finish.
- Windows will ask you to shut down
the computer. Click on No.
- Highlight the second Texas Instruments
PCI-11131 CardBus controller and click on the properties button.
- Remove the check in Disable in
this hardware profile and click OK. Again, this will bring
up the PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard. No should be selected. Click
on Next. No should be selected again. Click on the Next
button and then click on Finish.
- Windows will ask you to shut down
the computer. Click on Yes.
- The system will power off.
- PCMCIA is now enabled. Go ahead and
power the machine back on.
Updating the Video Driver
- Once you turn the machine on and reboots
into Windows 95, click on the Start Button, move up to Settings,
and click on Control Panel. From here double click on the System
icon.
- This should bring up System Properties.
Click on the Device Manager tab.
- In the device manager locate the Display
adapter and click on the "+" sign to the left.
- You will see that your current Display
adapter is set to Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA), click on the
Standard PCI Graphics Adapter to highlight it and then click on the
Properties button.
- Click on the Driver tab and
then click on the Update Driver button.
- This will bring up the Update Device
Driver Wizard.
- Windows will prompt you to search
for an updated driver. Yes should be selected. Let it do a search by
clicking on the Next button.
- Windows will tell you that it could
not find an updated driver. Click on the Other Locations button.
- Type in c:\drivers\video and
press the OK button.
- The Device Driver Wizard will tell
you that Windows found the Trident Cyber 9397 PCI Video Adapter,
Click on Finish.
- Windows 95 will begin to start copying
files but then stop and prompt for the diskette labeled Trident Windows
95/98 Display Driver. Click on OK.
- Windows will then tell you that it
cannot find a specific file.
- In the copy files from section type
in c:\drivers\video and click on OK.
- Windows will copy files then prompt
you to restart, click on Yes and the machine will restart.
- When Windows reloads you should still
be in the Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel, double-click
on the Display icon, and then click on the Settings tab.
- Click on the Advanced Properties
button.
- Now click on the Monitor tab
at the top. Click on the Change button.
- Leave it on Standard Monitor Types
and Laptop Display Panel (1024X768). Click on OK.
- Click on Apply, then click
on OK.
- Now adjust your video resolution to
1024X768. To do this, click and drag the Desktop Area slider to 1024X768.
- Now under Color palette, click on
the down arrow to change your color palette to High Color (16 bit).
Note: With the video card that is in the Xli you are capable
of displaying up to True Color (32 bit). You can do so if you choose,
but you may notice a small performance decrease when displaying that
many colors.
- Now click Apply then click
OK.
- Your Display adapter is now correctly
updated.
Updating the LT Win Modem
- Click on the Start button and
click on Shutdown, ensure the bullet is in Shut down the computer,
and click on OK.
- When the WinBook has shut off, power
the WinBook back up.
- Press the F2 key several times
as the machine is booting.
- You will be in the PHOENIX BIOS Setup
Utility.
- Use the right arrow key to change
to the Advanced tab along the top.
- Arrow down to Peripheral Configuration,
and press Enter. The Modem Configuration should be set
to Enabled, the base I/O address should be set to 2f8. The
first DMA Channel should be set to 5, the second to 6. If
any of the above are not set properly, highlight the wrong item and
press the minus sign key until the proper selection is displayed.
- Next press the ESC key.
- Press the F10.
- It will ask you to confirm saving
the settings. Press Enter.
- The system will now reboot to Windows
- Click on the Start Button,
go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here
double click on the System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties.
Click on the Device Manager tab.
- Click on the plus (+) next
to Other Devices.
- Highlight the first out of the three
Unknown Device and click on Properties. Click on the Driver
tab.
- Click on Update Driver. This
will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
- Yes should be selected. Click
Next.
- Windows will say that it could not
find an updated driver. Click on the Other Locations button.
- Type in c:\drivers\modem and
press the OK button
- The Device Driver Wizard will say
that it found the LT Win Modem. Click Finish.
- Windows will say that the LT Installation
disk is required now. Click OK.
- In the "copy files from"
text box, type in c:\drivers\modem and press Enter.
- Windows will then find a Wave Device
for Voice Modem. Click Next.
- Windows will say that it was not able
to locate driver, click on the Other Locations Button.
- The Device Driver Wizard will tell
you that it found the Voice Modem Serial Wave Device, click Finish.
- The LT Win Modem Properties window
will be open. Click on Close from the driver Tab.
- The modem is now properly set up.
Updating the ESS sound card
- Windows should still be in the Device
Manager.
- Click on the plus (+) next
to Other Devices.
- Highlight the next Unknown Device
and click on properties.
- Click on the driver tab.
- Click on Update Driver.
- Yes should be selected. Click
on Next.
- Windows will tell you that it could
not find an updated driver.
- Click on the Other Locations
button.
- Type in c:\drivers\audio and
press the OK button
- Windows will tell you it found the
ESS 1869 Control Interface. Click on Finish.
- Windows will ask you to insert the
driver disk, click on the OK button.
- In the "copy files from"
text box, type in c:\drivers\audio and press Enter. Windows
will copy some more files take you back to the driver tab.
- Click on Close, to close the
ESS 1869 Control Interface properties window. This will bring you
back to the Device Manager.
- Click on the plus (+) next
to Other Devices.
- Highlight the last Unknown Device
and click on properties.
- Click on the driver tab.
- Click on Update Driver.
- Yes should be selected. Click
on Next.
- Windows will say that it could not
find an updated driver. Click on the Other Locations button.
- Type in c:\drivers\audio and
press the OK button.
- Windows will say it found the ESS
1869 Plug and Play Audio Drive, click on Finish.
- Windows will copy some files then
stop and prompt you for the Windows 95 Disk 11. Click on OK.
- The next Window will say that the
file imaadp32.acm could not be found.
- Click on the down arrow in the "copy
files from" box and select c:\drivers\cabs and then click
on OK.
- Once Windows 95 finishes copying files
click on Close to close out the ESS 1689 Plug and Play properties
window.
- Click on the Close button to
exit out of the Device Manager. Your sound drivers have been successfully
set up.
Enabling the Infrared Port
- You should still be in the Control
Panel, double click on the Add New Hardware icon.
- Click on Next in Add new
hardware Wizard window.
- In the second window put the bullet
in No, click on Next.
- Select Infrared from the list of Hardware
Types, click on Next.
- Click on Next again and the
Add Infrared Device Wizard will start.
- Standard Infrared Devices as
well as Built-In Infrared port on Laptop or desktop will be highlighted
by default, click on Next.
- In the next box highlight Generic
Ir Serial Port (com3), click on Next.
- In the next windows you will see a
message that software support will be provided on COM4 and LPT3, leave
this as the default and click on Next.
- After windows has finished copying
files it will install the Infrared LPT port and the Infrared Serial
(COM) connections port, when this completes click Finish.
- Close the Control Panel. Infrared
is now installed
