You will need the following things to reinstall on this machine:

  • Windows 95 CD

  • Windows 95 Certificate of Authenticity Number.

  • Xli Boot Disk

  • Xli Video Disk

  • Xli Audio Disk

  • Xli Modem Driver Disk

  • Xli PIIX4, CD-ROM, Mouse Disk

If you have a new hard drive start here. If you are reloading Windows 95 on an existing hard drive, skip to the Deleting the Primary DOS Partition section.

  1. Insert the Xli boot disk into the floppy drive.
  2. Power on the Xli
  3. Choose the PHDISK option from the menu. (You may have two PHDISK options, if so, choose PHDISK /CREATE).
  4. The computer should restart on its own when it is finished.
  5. Skip to the Creating the Primary DOS Partition section.

Deleting the primary DOS Partition

  1. Insert the Xli boot disk into the floppy drive.
  2. Power on the Xli
  3. Choose the FDISK option from the menu.
  4. It will ask you if you want to enable large disk support. Press Y and press Enter
  5. Choose option 3, Delete partition or Logical DOS drive.
  6. Choose Option 1, Delete primary DOS Partition.
  7. Select the partition you want to delete. You are typically going to delete the C1: PRI-DOS partition. Caution: The Non-DOS partition is your suspend to disk partition. You do not want to delete it.
  8. Enter the Volume Label for the drive exactly as listed in the Fdisk menu and press Enter. If there is nothing listed under volume label, press Enter.
  9. When prompted, Are you sure (Y/N), press Y and press Enter. After you confirm the deletion, the program will then tell you that the partition is deleted.
  10. Press the ESC key.

Creating the Primary DOS Partition

  1. Choose the FDISK option from the menu.
  2. It will ask you if you want to enable large disk support. Press Y and press Enter
  3. You will now be on the first screen of Fdisk. Choose option 1, Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive.
  4. Choose option 1 Create Primary DOS Partition.
  5. When it asks you if you want the maximum available size, press Y and press Enter.
  6. Press ESC.
  7. The system will reboot to the menu.
  8. Choose the format option, option 3, Format Hard Drive (Unconditional, include system files). Press 3 and press Enter.
  9. When prompted to Proceed with format (Y/N), press Y and press Enter
  10. This will format the drive. The process may take as long as 20 minutes depending on the size of your hard disk drive.
  11. You will be prompted for a Volume Label, press Enter.

Reinstalling Windows 95

  1. Reboot the computer with the boot disk in the floppy drive.
  2. You should be at an A:\ Prompt after the menu.
  3. The last option will be #6, Reinstall Windows 95 onto a WinBook hard drive, press 6 and then press Enter.
  4. This will setup your hard drive to reinstall Windows 95. You will see a number of files being copied.
  5. After a few seconds you will get a message Please insert your Windows 95 CD, after this open your CD-ROM tray and insert you CD labeled Microsoft Windows 95 with USB support and press Enter.
  6. This will copy Windows 95 onto your hard drive and begin the installation. When finished, setup will ask you to press Enter to continue setup, or press ESC to quit. If you wish to continue, press the Enter key.
  7. Windows 95 Setup will begin by starting the Scandisk program.
  8. When Scandisk completes, the Windows 95 setup screen will appear. The first screen you come up to will explain that installing Windows 95 will take about 30-60 minutes. To begin setup, click on the Continue button.
  9. The next screen will say that Setup is preparing Windows. Once that screen goes away, you will be presented with the Software License Agreement. If you agree to the terms of the License, click on the Yes button. If you do not agree, and click No, Windows Setup will inform you that it cannot continue.
  10. If you continue, Windows Setup will then show you the three steps to install Windows 95. Click Next when you have finished reading these steps.
  11. Setup will ask you what directory you would like to install windows to. Choose the default option, C:\WINDOWS. Then click the Next button.
  12. Next, Setup will ask you what type of installation you would like to do. We suggest Typical. If you are an advanced user you may divert here. These instructions will continue with the Typical option.
  13. Windows Setup will then ask you to enter your Product ID. Your product ID is located on the Certificate of Authenticity, on the Introducing Windows 95 booklet. The Product ID is in the form: #####-OEM-#######-#####. When you enter the Product ID into the box, you do not need to enter the dashes (-) or the OEM. These have already been entered for you. When you are done click the Next button.
  14. You will now be asked for your Name and Company. The company name is optional. When you have finished, click the Next button.
  15. Widows Setup will then ask you if you have installed a Network Adapter or Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture card. Do not select either of these options. Click the Next button, and windows will begin analyzing your computer to see what devices you have installed. This process can take up to 15 minutes to complete.
  16. After this is done, Setup will ask you which components you want to install. We suggest choosing the default option, Install the most common components (recommended). If you are an advanced user, you may choose one of the other options. These instructions assume, you have chosen to Install the most common components
  17. Note: After installing Windows 95, you have the option of installing additional components, or removing installed components, at any time. You can do this by using the Windows Setup tab of the Add/Remove Programs tool in the Control Panel.
  18. Setup will now ask you if you want to make a Startup disk. There is no need to create one at this point. You already have one! The disk labeled, XL Boot Disk Windows 95, that came with your computer is a Startup disk. It is the same one that you used to start this installation of Windows 95. To continue without making one, choose No and then click the Next button.
  19. You are now ready to start Copying Windows 95 files to your computer's hard drive. Click the Next button to continue. This process will take between 20 and 40 minutes, but once it is completed, you are just a few minutes away from being done.
  20. After your computer is done copying files, you will see the Finishing Setup screen. Click the Finish button.
  21. If any floppy disks or CD’s are in your computer remove them now and then click the OK button.
  22. Your computer will reboot and begin configuring components. Windows will then ask you what time zone you’re in. Choose your current time zone from the list on the right side of the window. (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana is selected by default. Then click the Apply button, and then click the OK button.
  23. Next Windows will begin the procedure for setting up a printer. If you do not have one, you can click the Cancel button to continue without setting up a printer. Follow the instructions that came with your printer for information on how to set it up in Windows 95. For more information on installing printers, contact your printer manufacturer/printer support. For the purposes of this WinBook Tech Article we will continue by clicking the cancel button.
  24. You have now finished setting up Windows 95 on your WinBook. Continue by clicking the OK button. Your computer will then reboot to gather more information.

Reinstalling Internet Explorer

  1. After the WinBook reboots, Windows 95 setup will need more information to finish customizing the computer. Click on the Next button to continue.
  2. You will be prompted to install Internet Explorer 4.0, click on the Next button to continue. Internet Explorer setup will then ask you what language you want to use. Follow the default (English) and click on the Next button.
  3. Setup will then state that the following components are being installed:
      1. Internet Explorer Common Components
      2. Multimedia Components
      3. Web Authoring
      4. Additional Active X Controls
  4. Setup will then start automatically start configuring the system. After the installation setup will prompt you to close all programs restart, click on OK.

Updating the Universal Serial Bus

  1. Put the Windows 95 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click on the Start button
  3. Choose Run.
  4. Type in D:\other\updates\USB\usbsupp.exe and press Enter.
  5. Windows will ask you if you want to install Microsoft USB Supplement. Click Yes.
  6. Read the License Agreement, if you agree click Yes to continue.
  7. The USB setup will first run Scandisk on the C: drive. Let it complete the scan.
  8. After Scandisk is completed, Windows 95 will copy some files. When it is done the Microsoft USB Supplement window will appear and notify that it is complete. Windows will then want to restart. Click on OK.
  9. Once your machine reboots back into Windows 95 click on the Start button.
  10. Choose Run.
  11. Type in D:\other\updates\USB\usbupd2.exe and press Enter.
  12. Windows will copy some files and then take you back to the desktop.
  13. Close any open windows and click on Start, select Shutdown, highlight Restart the Computer and then click on OK.

Updating the Hard Drive controller and Power Management Controller

  1. Once your machine has rebooted back into Windows 95, insert the disk labeled Xli PIIX4, CD-ROM, and Mouse.
  2. Click on the Start button
  3. Choose Run.
  4. Type in a:\piix4\setup.exe and press enter.
  5. Click on Next on the Intel 82371XB INF Update Installer.
  6. Read, then close the License agreement.
  7. Click on Yes to agree to the terms of the agreement.
  8. Another screen will come up notifying you of some file updates. . Follow the default and click on the Next button.
  9. Windows will copy some files then prompt you to restart the computer, remove the diskette from the floppy drive, then click on OK.
  10. The machine will restart itself, as it loads into Windows 95 it will find a series of new hardware devices.
  11. On the forth device Windows will stop and start the Update Device Wizard for the Intel 8237AB PCI Bus master IDE Controller.
  12. Click on Next, and Windows will search and find an updated driver.
  13. Click on Finish.
  14. The computer will continue to load windows, as it does it will find two more devices and set them up, then it will prompt you to restart. Click on YES.
  15. As Windows restarts it will find two more devices and install them with the Update Device Wizard, then will complete its loading of Windows 95.
  16. Once you are back in Windows 95 and you are at your desktop, click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
  17. This should bring up System Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  18. Locate the Hard Disk Controller in Device Manager and click on the "+" sign to the left. Below that you will see Intel 82371 AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. Click on it to highlight it and then click on Properties button.
  19. Click on the Settings tab. Under Dual IDE channel settings, you should see Default.
  20. Click on the arrow to the right of the box and choose Only Primary IDE Channel Enabled, and then click on the OK button.
  21. To finish, click on Start, select Shutdown, highlight Restart the Computer and click on the OK button.

Enabling PCMCIA Support

  1. Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
  2. This should bring up System Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  3. The PCMCIA Socket should have three devices listed under it.
  4. Two Texas Instruments PCI-1131 CardBus Controllers and a PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller will have red Xs on them.
  5. Highlight the PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller and click remove.
  6. Windows will ask you to confirm deletion. Click OK.
  7. Highlight the first Texas Instruments PCI-11131 CardBus controller and click properties.
  8. Remove the check in Disable in this hardware profile and click OK. This will bring up the PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard. No should be selected. Click Next.
  9. Again No should be selected. Click on Next and then click on Finish.
  10. Windows will ask you to reboot. Click No.
  11. Highlight the second Texas Instruments PCI-11131 CardBus controller and click properties.
  12. Remove the check in Disable in this hardware profile and click OK. This will bring up the PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard. No should be selected. Click Next.
  13. Again No should be selected. Click on Next and then click on Finish.
  14. Windows will ask you to shut down the computer now. Click Yes.
  15. The system will power off. Go ahead and power the WinBook back on.
  16. PCMCIA is now enabled.

Updating the Video Driver

  1. Once you machine has rebooted back into Windows 95 and you are at your desktop, click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
  2. This should bring up System Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  3. In the device manager choose Display adapter and click on the "+" sign to the left.
  4. You will see that your current Display adapter is set to Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA), click on that Standard PCI Graphics Adapter and then click on the Properties button.
  5. Insert the diskette labeled XLi Video.
  6. Click on the Driver tab and then click on the Update Driver button.
  7. This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
  8. Yes should be selected. Click Next.
  9. Windows will tell you it has found the Trident Cyber 9397 PCI Video Adapter. Click on Finish.
  10. Windows 95 will begin to start copying files but then stop and prompt for the diskette labeled Trident Windows 95/98 Display Driver.
  11. Click on OK.
  12. In the copy files from section type in A:\ click on OK.
  13. Windows will copy files then prompt you to restart. Take the diskette out of the floppy drive and click on YES.
  14. When Windows reloads you should still be in the Control Panel.
  15. In the Control Panel, double-click on the Display icon, and then choose the Settings tab.
  16. Click on the Advanced Properties button.
  17. Now click on the Monitor tab at the top. Click on the Change button.
  18. Leave it on Standard Monitor Types and Laptop Display Panel (1024X768). Click OK.
  19. Click Apply, then click OK.
  20. Now adjust your video resolution to 1024X768. Click and drag the Desktop Area slider to 1024X768.
  21. Now under Color palette, click on the down arrow to change your color palette to High Color (16 bit). Note: The WinBook Xli is capable of displaying True Color (32 bit) if you desire to do so. You may notice some impact on system performance with higher color palettes.
  22. Now click Apply.
  23. It will say that Windows is now going to adjust your new display settings. Click on OK to continue. A new window will appear asking you if you want to keep these settings, click on Yes.
  24. Your Display adapter is now correctly updated. Click on OK to close out of the display properties

Updating the LT Win Modem

  1. Go to the Start button and click on Shutdown, ensure the bullet is in Shut down the computer, and click on OK.
  2. Power the WinBook back up.
  3. Press the F2 key several times as the machine is booting.
  4. You will be in the PHOENIX BIOS Setup Utility.
  5. Use the right arrow key to change to the Advanced tab along the top.
  6. Arrow down to Peripheral Configuration, and press enter once it is highlighted.
  7. Modem Configuration should be set to Enabled, the base I/O address should be set to 2f8. The first DMA Channel should be set to 5, the second to 6. If any settings are not set properly, highlight the wrong item and press the minus sign key until the proper selection is displayed.
  8. Next press the ESC key.
  9. While in the BIOS still, it would be helpful to make sure that the audio DMA channels do not conflict with the modem DMA channels. Arrow up to the Audio Options Menu and press the Enter key. The audio should either be set to Enabled or set to AUTO. If it is set to Enabled, verify that the DMA channels are set to 0 and 1. If they are not, make sure to change them. If it is set to AUTO, you should be OK.
  10. Press the ESC key.
  11. Press the F10.
  12. It will ask you to confirm saving the settings. Press Enter.
  13. The system will now reboot to Windows
  14. Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
  15. This should bring up System Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  16. Click on the plus next to other devices.
  17. Highlight the first Unknown Device and click on Properties. Click on the Driver tab.
  18. Insert the diskette labeled XLi Modem Driver.
  19. Click on update driver.
  20. This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
  21. Yes should be selected. Click Next.
  22. Windows will say that it found the LT Win Modem. Click Finish.
  23. Windows will say that the LT Installation disk is required now. Click OK.
  24. In copy file from type in A:\ and press Enter.
  25. Windows will then find a Wave Device for Voice Modem. Click Next.
  26. Windows will find an updated driver for the device.
  27. The LT Win Modem Properties window will be open. Click on finish.
  28. Remove the floppy disk from the laptop. The modem is now properly set up.

Updating the ESS sound card

  1. Windows should still be in the Device Manager.
  2. Click on the plus (+)next to Other Devices.
  3. Highlight the next Unknown Device and click on properties.
  4. Insert the XLi disk labeled Audio, Windows 95 on it.
  5. Click on the driver tab.
  6. Click on Update Driver.
  7. Yes should be selected. Click on Next.
  8. Windows will tell you it found the ESS 1869 Control Interface. Click Finish.
  9. Windows will ask you to insert the audio driver disk. Click on OK.
  10. In copy files from type in A:\ and press Enter.
  11. Click on Close, to close the ESS 1869 Control Interface properties window.
  12. This will bring you back to the Device Manager.
  13. Click on the plus next to Other Devices.
  14. Highlight the last Unknown Device and click on properties.
  15. Insert the XLi disk labeled Audio, Windows 95 on it.
  16. Click on the driver tab.
  17. Click on Update Driver.
  18. Yes should be selected. Click on Next.
  19. Windows will say it found the ESS 1869 Plug and Play Audio Drive, click on Finish.
  20. Windows will copy some files then stop and prompt you for the Windows 95 Disk 11, click on OK.
  21. The next Window will say that the file imaadp32.acm could not be found.
  22. Insert the Windows 95 CD.
  23. Click on the down Arrow in the copy files from box, select d:\win95, and click on OK.
  24. Once Windows 95 finishes copying files click on Close to close out the ESS 1689 Plug and Play properties window.
  25. Close the Device Manager. Your sound drivers have been successfully set up.

Enabling the Infrared Port

  1. You should still be in the Control Panel, double click on the Add New Hardware icon.
  2. Click on Next in Add new hardware Wizard window.
  3. In the second window put the bullet in No, click on Next.
  4. Select Infrared from the list of Hardware Types, click on Next.
  5. Click on Next again and the Add Infrared Device Wizard will start.
  6. Standard Infrared Devices as well as Built-in Infrared port on Laptop or desktop will be highlighted by default, click on Next.
  7. In the next box highlight Generic Ir Serial Port (com3), click on Next.
  8. In the next windows you will see a message that software support will be provided on COM4 and LPT3, leave this as the default and click on Next.
  9. After windows is finished copying files it will install the Infrared LPT port and the Infrared Serial (COM) connections port, when this completes click Finish.
  10. Close the Control Panel. Infrared is now installed.
