General Information: This guide is provided to setup the USB ports on the XL for use with USB devices. If you are having problems setting up the drivers for a particular device you will want to contact the manufacturer. One of the nice things about USB is that you can link up to 127 devices to each other in a chain that will connect to one port in the computer. It also offers hot insertion and removal of the devices. In order to complete the install you will need your Windows 95 with USB support CD and the WinBook XL driver diskette.

  1. Click on the Start button and go to Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Double click on the System.
  3. Locate the PCI universal serial bus under Other Devices. Left click on it once, then click the Remove button.
  4. Now insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM with USB support in the CD-ROM drive.
  5. Click on the Start button and click on Run.
  6. Type in "d:\other\usb\usbsupp.exe" or "d:\other\upgrades\usb\usbsupp.exe" then hit Enter.
  7. Read the License agreement and hit Enter if you agree.
  8. Windows will then run scandisk and copy some files to your hard drive. When completed Windows will prompt you to restart your computer. Windows may appear to lock up but it is still working.
  9. When it restarts it will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
  10. Insert the disk labeled XL PIIX4, CD-ROM, MOUSE, MODEM, VIDEO, into the floppy drive and click Next.
  11. Windows will then say it found an updated driver but it is the incorrect one. Click on the Other Locations.
  12. Type in "a:\PIIX4" then press Enter.
  13. It will then find the Intel 82371AB PCI to USB host controller. Click Finish.
  14. Windows will then say that it can't find the following file uhcd.sys, the Copy Files From box type C:\Windows\System, and press Enter.
  15. Windows will then say that it can’t find the following file usbd.sys, the Copy Files From box type C:\Windows\System, and press Enter.
  16. Windows will then setup the rest for the software for the USB ports, and root hub.
