General Information: This WinBook Tech Article is intended for a specific problem. The symptoms of which are, when you choose to restart windows it gives you an error that the himem.sys file is missing or corrupted. This does not occur if you choose to shutdown the computer first, then restart. If you are experiencing these symptoms then continue with the following steps.

  1. Click on the start button, go to run.
  2. Type in sysedit, and press enter.
  3. This will open up several windows, the first of which should be autoexec.bat.
  4. Place the cursor at the front of the first line and press enter. If there are no previous entries then skip that step.
  5. In the space that we made add the following line.
  6. SET DOS16M=2
  7. Click on the x in the top right hand corner of the window. It will ask you if you want to save the changes made to the autoexec.bat. Click on the yes button.
  8. Click on the start button, choose shutdown and shutdown down your computer.
  9. The computer should now restart with out any problems.
