In getting rid of corrupted entries or other problems with the System Registry in Windows 95, the following steps must be taken:

  1. Go to Start, Shutdown, Restart in MS-DOS Mode.
  2. At the C:\, type CD\WINDOWS and press Enter
  3. Type ATTRIB -H -S -R SYSTEM.DAT and press Enter
  4. (please note that the 0 in the filename extensions below are ZEROS, not "O" !)
  5. Hit the F3 key, backspace over the T, and type a 0 and press Enter
  6. Hit the F3 key, backspace over SYSTEM.DA0, and type USER.DAT and press Enter
  7. Hit the F3 key, backspace over the T, and type a 0 and press Enter
  8. Hit the F3 key, backspace over USER.DA0, and type C:\DRVSPACE.BIN and press Enter
  9. Hit the F3 key, backspace over C:\DRVSPACE.BIN, and type C:\MSDOS.SYS and press Enter
  10. Type DEL SYSTEM.DAT and press Enter
  11. Type DEL SYSTEM.DA0 and press Enter
  12. Type DEL USER.DAT and press Enter
  13. Type DEL USER.DA0 and press Enter
  14. Type DEL C:\DRVSPACE.BIN and press Enter
  15. Type DEL C:\MSDOS.SYS and press Enter
  16. Insert the WinBook Windows 95 Boot disk into Drive A:
  17. Reboot the machine.
  18. From the menu, choose option 10 and press Enter
  19. Follow the instructions on the screen carefully, as this will guide you through the Windows 95 installation.

Here are some other considerations:

It will ask what type of installation you want to do. Choose "Typical", as some of the other choices may leave you with pieces missing or added that you did not desire.

When it gets to installing Microsoft Exchange, do not check the box for Microsoft Network unless you really are going to log on to this commercial service. Also, do not check the box for Microsoft Mail unless you are connecting your machine to a network that is using Microsoft Mail for e-mail services. These choices will ask you to provide information that you do not posses and may cause problems later.
