You will need the following things to reinstall on
this machine:
If you have a new hard drive start here. If you
are reloading an existing hard drive skip to the next section
- Insert the XL boot disk into the floppy drive.
- Power on the XL
- Choose the HDPREP option from the menu.
- A last chance warning will come up. Press Enter.
- When HDPREP is finished the computer will restart.
Skip to the Creating the Primary DOS Partition section.
Deleting the Primary DOS Partition
- Insert the XL boot disk into the floppy drive.
- Power on the XL
- Choose the FDISK option from the menu.
- A last chance warning will come up. Press Enter.
- It will ask you if you want to enable large disk
support. Press Y and press Enter
- Choose option 3, Delete partition or Logical DOS
drive.
- Choose Option 1, Delete primary DOS Partition.
- Select the partition you want to delete. You are
typically going to delete the C1: PRI-DOS partition. Caution: The Non-DOS
partition is your suspend to disk partition. You do not want to delete
it.
- Enter the Volume Label for the drive exactly as
listed in the fdisk menu and press Enter. If there is nothing
listed under volume label, press Enter.
- When prompted, Are you sure (Y/N), press Y
and press Enter. After you confirm the deletion, the program
will then tell you that the partition is deleted.
- Press the ESC key. Turn the power off and
then restart the computer.
Creating the Primary DOS Partition
- Choose the FDISK option from the menu.
- A last chance warning will come up. Press Enter.
- It will ask you if you want to enable large disk
support. Press Y and press Enter
- You will now be on the first screen of Fdisk.
Choose option 1, Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive.
- Choose option 1 Create Primary DOS Partition.
- When it asks you if you want the maximum available
size, press Y and press Enter.
- Press ESC.
- The system will reboot to the menu.
- Choose the format option, option 3, Format Hard
Drive (Unconditional, include system files). Press 3 and press Enter.
- When asked to continue press Enter.
- When prompted to Proceed with format (Y/N), press
Y and press Enter
- This will format the drive. The process may take
as long as 20 minutes depending on the size of your hard disk drive.
- You will be prompted for a Volume Label, press
Enter.
Reinstalling Windows 95
- Reboot the computer with the boot disk in the
floppy drive.
- You should be at a A:\ Prompt after the menu.
- The last option will be #6, Reinstall Windows
95 onto a WinBook hard drive, press 6 and then press Enter.
- This will setup your hard drive to reinstall Windows
95. You will see a number of files being copied.
- After a few seconds you will get a message Please
insert your Windows 95 CD, after this open your CD-ROM tray and
insert you CD labeled Microsoft Windows 95 with USB support and
press Enter.
- This will copy Windows 95 onto your hard drive
and begin the installation.
- Windows 95 Setup will begin by starting the Scandisk
program.
- When Scandisk is finished, the Software License
Agreement will appear. If you agree to the terms of the License, click
the Yes button. If you do not agree, and click No, Windows Setup will
inform you that it cannot continue.
- If you continue, Windows Setup will then show
you the three steps to install Windows 95. Click Next when you have
finished reading these steps.
- Setup will ask you what directory you would like
to install windows to. Choose the default option, C:\WINDOWS. Then click
the Next button.
- Next, Setup will ask you what type of installation
you would like to do. We suggest Typical. If you are an advanced user
you may divert here. These instructions will continue with the Typical
option.
- Windows Setup will then ask you to enter your
Product ID. Your product ID is located on the Certificate of Authenticity,
on the Introducing Windows 95 booklet. The Product ID is in the form:
#####-OEM-#######-#####. When you enter the Product ID into the box,
you do not need to enter the dashes (-) or the OEM. These have already
been entered for you. When you are done click the Next button.
- You will now be asked for your Name and Company.
The company name is optional. When you have finished, click the Next
button.
- Widows Setup will then ask you if you have installed
a Network Adapter or Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture card. Do not select
either of these options. Click the Next button, and windows will begin
analyzing your computer to see what devices you have installed. This
process can take up to 15 minutes to complete.
- After this is done, Setup will ask you which components
you want to install. We suggest choosing the default option, Install
the most common components (recommended). If you are an advanced user,
you may choose one of the other options. These instructions assume,
you have chosen to Install the most common components
- Note: After installing Windows 95, you have the
option of installing additional components, or removing installed components,
at any time. You can do this by using the Windows Setup tab of the Add/Remove
Programs tool in the Control Panel.
- Setup will now ask you if you want to make a Startup
disk. There is no need to create one at this point. You already have
one! The disk labeled, XL Boot Disk Windows 95, that came with your
computer is a Startup disk. It is the same one that you used to start
this installation of Windows 95. To continue without making one, choose
No and then click the Next button.
- You are now ready to start Copying Windows 95
files to your computer's hard drive. Click the Next button to continue.
This process will take between 20 and 40 minutes, but once it is completed,
you are just a few minutes away from being done.
- After your computer is done copying files, you
will see the Finishing Setup screen. Click the Finish button.
- If any floppy disks or CDs are in your computer
remove them now and then click the OK button.
- Your computer will reboot and begin configuring
components. Windows will then ask you what time zone you're in. Choose
your current time zone from the list on the right side of the window.
(GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana is selected by default.
Then click the Apply button, and then click the Ok button.
- Next Windows will begin the procedure for setting
up a printer. If you do not have one, you can click the Cancel button
to continue without setting up a printer. Follow the instructions that
came with your printer for information on how to set it up in Windows
95. For more information on installing printers, contact your printer
manufacturer/printer support. For the purposes of this WinBook Tech
Article we will continue by clicking the cancel button.
- You have now finished setting up Windows 95 on
your WinBook. Continue by clicking the OK button. Your computer will
then reboot.
Updating the Video Driver
- Once you machine has rebooted into Windows 95
and you are at your desktop, click on the Start Button, go up
to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double
click on the System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties. Click
on the Device Manager tab.
- In the device manager choose Display adapter and
click on the "+" sign to the left.
- You will see that your current Display adapter
is set to Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA), click on the Properties
button.
- Click on the Driver tab and then click on the
Update Driver button.
- This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
- Yes should be selected. Click Next.
- Windows will say that it could not find an updated
drive. Click on Other Locations.
- Insert the XL disk labeled PIIX4, CD ROM, MOUSE,
MODEM, VIDEO on it.
- Type A:\Video under Copy manufacturer's
files from: and press Enter.
- Windows will tell you it has found the Chips &
Tech 65554 PCI. Click on Finish.
- If you are asked for a diskette for Chips &
Tech 65554 PCI click on OK. Then in the next box type in A:\video
in the location box and then click on OK.
- Click on the Close button to close the
Device Manager.
- In the Control Panel, double-click on the Display
icon, and then choose the Settings tab.
- Click on the Advanced Properties button.
- Now click on the Monitor tab at the top.
Click on the Change button.
- Leave it on Standard Monitor Types and Laptop
Display Panel (1024X768). Click Ok.
- Click Apply, then click Ok.
- Now adjust your video to the appropriate desktop
area. If you purchased the 12.1" TFT screen your best resolution
will be 800X600 pixels, if you purchased the larger 13.3" TFT screen
your best resolution will be 1024X768. Click and drag the Desktop Area
slider to your best screen size.
- Now under Color palette, click on the down arrow
to change your color palette to High Color (16 bit).
- Now click Apply.
- You will be asked if you want to restart your
computer.
- Remove the floppy disk then click on Yes
and let the laptop reboot.
- Your Display adapter is now correctly updated.
Updating Your Hard Drive Controller
- Once you machine has rebooted into Windows 95
and you are at your desktop, click on the Start Button, go up to Settings,
and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties. Click
on the Device Manager tab.
- Click the plus sign (+) next to Hard Disk Controllers.
- Highlight Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller and
click on Properties.
- Click on the Drivers tab and click on the Update
Drivers button.
- This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
- Yes should be selected. Click Next.
- Windows will say that it could not find an updated
drive. Click on Other Locations.
- Insert the XL disk with Modem on it labeled XL
PIIX4, CD ROM, MOUSE, MODEM, VIDEO and type in a:\piix4 and click Ok.
- The Wizard will find an Intel 82371AB PCI Bus Master
IDE Controller. Click on Finish.
- Eject the disk in your floppy drive and click yes
to reboot the computer.
- Once you are back in Windows 95 and you are at
your desktop, click on the Start Button, go up to Settings, and over
to Control Panel. From here double click on the System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties. Click on
the Device Manager tab.
- Locate the Hard Disk Controller in Device Manager
and click on the "+" sign to the left. Below that you will
see Intel 82371 AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. Click on it to highlight
it and then click on Properties button.
- Click on the Settings tab. Under Dual IDE channel
settings, you should see Default.
- Click on the arrow to the right of the box and
choose Only Primary IDE Channel Enabled.
- Click on Close and then click on OK.
- You will be prompted to restart the computer, click
on Yes and your computer will restart.
Updating the Power Management Controller
- Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings,
and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the System
icon.
- This should bring up System Properties. Click
on the Device Manager tab.
- Click on the plus next to Other Devices.
- Highlight the PCI Bridge and click on the
properties button.
- Insert the XL disk labeled XL PIIX4, CD ROM, MOUSE,
MODEM, VIDEO on it.
- Click on the Driver tab. Click on Update
Driver.
- This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
Yes should be selected. Click next.
- Windows will tell you it could not find a driver.
Click the Other Locations button.
- Type in A:\piix4 and press Enter.
- Windows will tell you it found the Intel 82371AB
Power Management Controller. Click on finish.
- Windows will bring up the Intel 82371AB Power
Management Controller Properties window. Click on close.
- Now click on Ok.
- Finally, in the upper left hand corner of the
Contol Panel window, go to File and click on Close.
Updating the Universal Serial Bus
- Put the Windows 95 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
- Click on the Start button
- Choose Run.
- Type in D:\other\usb\usbsupp.exe and press
Enter.
- Windows will ask you if you want to install Microsoft
USB Supplement. Click Yes.
- Read the License Agreement, if you agree click
Yes to continue.
- The Setup will run Scandisk and then copy some
files. When it is done the Microsoft USB Supplement window will appear
and notify that it is complete. Windows will then want to restart. Remove
the floppy disk from the drive. Then click on OK.
- The reboot may appear to hang but it is updating
files.
- Once you machine has rebooted into Windows 95
and you are at your desktop, click on the Start Button, go up
to Settings, and over to Control Panel. From here double
click on the System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties. Click on
the Device Manager tab.
- Click on the plus next to Other Devices.
- Highlight PCI Universal Serial Bus and click Properties.
- Click on the Driver tab. Click on Update
Driver.
- This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
Yes should be selected. Click Next.
- Insert the XL disk labeled XL PIIX4, CD ROM, MOUSE,
MODEM, VIDEO on it and click next.
- Windows will say that it found a driver, but it
is not the updated driver. Click Other Locations.
- Type in A:\pIIx4 and press Enter.
- Windows will say that it found the Intel 82371AB
PCI to USB Host Controller. Click finish.
- Windows will say that it could not find the file
uhcd.sys In the Copy Files From box type C:\Windows\System, and
press Enter. The installation will complete.
- USB has successfully been installed.
- Eject the diskette and CD-ROM in your unit.
Enabling CardBus PCMCIA Support
- From Control Panel double click
on the System icon.
- Click on the Device Manager tab.
- PCMCIA Socket should have 3 devices listed underneath
it.
- Two Texas Instruments PCI-1131 CardBus Controllers
and one PCIC or Compatible PCMCIA Controller will have red Xs on them.
- Highlight the PCIC or Compatible PCMCIA Controller
and click Remove.
- Windows will ask you to confirm deletion, click
on OK.
- Highlight the first Texas Instruments PCI-1131
CardBus Controller by clicking it once and click on Properties.
- Remove the check in Disable in this hardware
profile and click on OK. This will bring up the PC Card (PCMCIA)
wizard. No should be selected, click on Next. Select No
again and click Next. Now click on Finish.
- Windows will ask you to shutdown, click on Yes.
- The system will power off; your PCMCIA is now
enabled
.
Updating the LT Win Modem
- Power back up the laptop.
- Press the DEL key several times as the
system is booting.
- You will be in the AMIBIOS HIFLEX SETUP UTILITY.
- Arrow down to Peripheral Setup and press
Enter.
- Com2 (Modem Port) should be highlighted and set
for 2f8h.
- If it is not set for Auto press the PG
DN key until the selection changes to 2f8h.
- Next press the ESC key.
- Press the F10.
- It will ask you to confirm saving the settings.
Press Enter.
- The system will now reboot to Windows
- Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings,
and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the
System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties. Click
on the Device Manager tab.
- Click on the plus next to other
devices.
- Highlight the second Unknown Device
and click on properties. Click on the driver tab.
- Click on update driver.
- This will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
- Yes should be selected. Click next.
- Windows will say that it could not find an updated
driver. Click on Other Locations.
- Insert the XL disk with Modem on it labeled XL
PIIX4, CD ROM, MOUSE, MODEM, VIDEO.
- Type A:\modem and press Enter.
- Windows will say that it found the LT Win Modem.
Click finish.
- Windows will say that the LT Installation disk
is required now. Click OK.
- In copy file from type in A:\modem and
press Enter.
- Windows will then find a Wave Device for Voice
Modem. Click next.
- Windows will then say it is unable to find the
driver. Click Other Locations.
- Type in A:\modem and press Enter.
- Windows will tell you it found the Voice Modem
Serial Wave Device. Click finish.
- The LT Win Modem Properties window will be open.
Click close.
- Now click Ok.
- Remove the floppy disk from the laptop.
- The modem is now properly set up.
Updating the Yamaha Sound System
- Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings,
and over to Control Panel. From here double click on the
System icon.
- This should bring up System Properties. Click
on the Device Manager tab.
- Click on the plus next to Other

- Highlight the Unknown Device and click
on properties.
- Insert the XL disk labeled Audio, Windows 95,
DOS on it.
- Click on the driver tab.
- Click on Update Driver.
- Yes should be selected. Click on next.
- Windows will tell you it found the YAMAHA OPL#-Sax
Sound System. Click Finish.
- Windows will ask you to insert he disk labeled
OPL3-Sax. Click OK.
- In copy files from type in A:\ and press
Enter.
- Windows will then ask for the Windows 95 CD-ROM.
Click OK.
- In copying files from type C:\drivers\cabs
and press Enter.
- The YAMAHA OPL3-Sax Sound System Properties windows
will be up. Click close.
- On the System Properties window click OK.
- Click on the Start Button, go up to Settings,
and over to Control Panel.
- Double click on Multimedia.
- Click on the MIDI tab.
- Under single instrument highlight YAMAHA OPL3-SA
SoftSynth and click Apply. Click OK.
- Now reboot your computer by clicking on the Start
Button, go up to Shutdown, choose the second option (Restart
Computer) and click Yes.
- Your sound drivers have been successfully set
up.
Installing Infrared Support
- Click on the Start button, go up to Settings,
and over to Control Panel.
- Double click the Add New Hardware icon.
- Click Next on the first window.
- You will be asked, do you want Windows to search
for your new hardware. Click to select the No option and click
Next.
- The next screen will prompt you to select the
type of hardware you want to install. Click Infrared and click
Next.
- Click Next on the following screen to start
the Add Infrared Device Wizard.
- You will now be asked to specify the Manufacturer
and Model. Standard Infrared Devices should be highlighted under
Manufacturers and Built in Infrared Port on Laptop or Desktop
should be selected under Model. Click Next.
- You will now prompted to select a port for the
infrared device. Click on Generic IR Serial Port
(COM3), and click Next.
- Make note of the Virtual ports, one for Infrared
Serial (COM) port and one for Infrared Printer (LPT) port. These are
the settings you will use to connect to another device. Click Next.
- Click Finish. You have completed installation
of the Infrared Device.
Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
To reinstall the Internet Explorer 4.0 portion of
your operating system you will need to have you Internet Explorer 4.0
CD available. This is not needed for your WinBook XL to function properly
but it was on your hard drive when you originally purchased the machine.
Microsoft has made Internet Explorer 4. 0 available to you. If you don't
have your CD or didn't get one with the purchase of your machine it is
a free download over the internet at http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40/download/win95.htm.
Once you have the Internet Explorer 4.0 files available,
either on your hard drive or CD, Run the Ie4setup or Click on the Install
Internet Explorer 4.0 option from the autorun off of your Internet Explorer
4.0 CD. When questioned, choose the full install to have all the features
installed that shipped on your machine.
