NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

You will need the following things to reinstall on this computer:

• Windows 95 CD

• Windows 95 Certificate of Authenticity Number

• XL Boot Disk

• XL Audio Disk

• XL Driver Disk

• Internet Explorer 4.0 (optional)

Deleting the Windows Directory

1. Insert the disk labeled XL Boot Disk into your floppy disk drive and turn your computer on, this will bring up a menu with six options and an A:\> prompt.
2. Type in C: and press Enter, this will bring you to a C:\> prompt.
3. Type copy c:\windows\command\deltree.exe and press Enter.
4. Type in the line C:\deltree C:\WINDOWS and press Enter.
5. Type in the line C:\deltree C:\intern~1 and press Enter
6. When the computer asks you to confirm the deletion type Y and then press Enter.
7. This will delete the Windows directory, this process may take up to 20 minutes.

Reinstalling Windows 95

1. Reboot your computer with the boot disk still in the floppy drive, you should be at an A:\> prompt after the menu loads.
2. The last option listed will be number six, Reinstall Windows 95 onto a WinBook hard drive. Press 6 and then press Enter, this will set up your hard drive to reinstall Windows 95. You will see a number of files being copied.
3. After a few seconds you will see the message, Please insert your Windows 95 CD. Insert the CD labeled Microsoft Windows 95 with USB Support. The CD-ROM drive will spin up and read the disc. This will take about 10 seconds. Wait until the orange light on the CD-ROM stops blinking.
4. This will copy the Windows 95 files onto your hard drive and then begin the installation.
5. Windows 95 Setup will begin by starting to run Scandisk on your computer.
6. Once Scandisk is finished, the Software License Agreement will appear. Click Yes to continue.
7. Next Windows Setup will show you the three steps to install Windows 95. Click on Next after you have read these steps.
8. Setup will ask you what directory you would like to install windows to. Select the default option, C:\Windows and then click on Next.
9. Setup will now ask you what type of installation you would like to do. We suggest Typical. If you are an advanced user you may divert here, these instructions will continue by describing a Typical installation.
10. Setup will now ask you to enter your Product ID Number. Your Product ID Number is located on the Certificate of Authenticity on the front of your Windows 95 booklet. The ID Number is in the form ####-OEM-#######-#####. When you enter the Product ID Number into the boxes you do not need to enter the dashes (-) or the OEM. These have already been entered for you. When you are done click the Next button.
11. You will now be asked for your Name and Company. The company name is optional. When you have finished, click on the Next button.
12. Setup will now ask you if you have installed a Network Adapter or Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture card. Do not select either of these options. Click on Next and Windows 95 will begin to analyze your computer to see what devices you have installed. This process can take up to 15 minutes to complete.
13. After this is done setup will ask you which components you would like to install. We suggest choosing the default option, Install the most common components (recommended). If you are an advance user you may choose one of the other options. These instructions assume that you have chosen to install the most common components.

Note: that after installing Windows 95 you have the option of installing additional components or removing installed components at any time by using the Windows Setup tab in Add/Remove Programs in Control panel.

14. Setup will ask if you would like to make a startup disk. There is no need to create one at this time since you already have one. To continue without making one click on No and then click on Next.
15. Windows Setup will now start to copy Windows 95 files to your computer’s hard drive. Click the Finish button when it has completed.
16. If any floppy disks or CD’s are in your computer remove them now and then click OK.
17. Your computer will now reboot itself and begin to configure your components. Windows will now ask you what time zone you’re in. Choose your current time zone from the list on the right side of the window. (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana is selected by default. Click on Apply and then click on OK.
18. Windows will begin the procedure for setting up a printer. If you do not have one you can click the Cancel button to continue. You can set up a printer later. Follow the instructions that came with your printer for information on how to set it up in Windows 95. For more information on installing printers contact your printer manufacturer for support. For the purposes of this WinBook Tech Article we will continue by clicking the cancel button.
19. You have now finished setting up Windows 95 on your WinBook. Continue by clicking the on OK, your computer will reboot.

Updating the Video Driver

1. Once your computer has rebooted into Windows 95 and you are at your desktop, click on the Start button, click on Settings, and then Control Panel. In Control Panel double click on the System icon.
2. This should bring up System Properties, click on the Device Manager tab.
3. In the device manager click on the + symbol next to Display Adapter.
4. You will see that your current Display Adapter is set to Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA), click once on it to highlight it and then click on Properties.
5. Click on the Driver tab and then click on Update Driver, this will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
6. Insert the XL disk labeled Piix4, CD-ROM, Mouse, Modem, Video.
7. Yes should be selected, click on Next.
8. Windows will say that it could not find an updated driver, click on Other Locations.
9. Under copy files from: type a:\video and press Enter.
10. Windows will tell you that it has found the Chips & Tech 65554 PCI, click on Finish.
11. Click on Close to close device manager.
12. In Control Panel double click on the Display icon and then click on the Settings tab.
13. Click on the Advanced Properties button.
14. Click on the Monitor tab at the top and click on Change.
15. Select Standard Monitor Types under manufactures. If you have a 12.1" screen select Laptop Display Panel (800X600) under models, if you have a 13.3" screen select Laptop Display Panel (1024X768).
16. Click on Apply and then click on OK.
17. Now adjust your video to the appropriate desktop area. If you have a 12.1" screen your best resolution will be 800X600 pixels, if you have a 13.3" screen your best resolution will be 1024X768. Click and drag the Desktop Area slider to your best resolution.
18. Under Color Palette click the down arrow to change your color palette to High Color (16 bit) and click on OK.
19. You will be asked if you would like to restart your computer, remove the floppy disk from your computer and click on Yes.
20. Your Display adapter is now correctly updated.

Updating Your Hard Drive Controller

1. From Control Panel double click on the System icon.
2. Click on the Device Manager tab.
3. Click on the + symbol next to Hard Disk Controllers and then click once on Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller to highlight it and then click on Properties.
4. Click on the Driver tab and then click on Update Driver, this will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
5. Insert the XL disk labeled Piix4, CD-ROM, Mouse, Modem, Video.
6. Yes should be selected, click on Next.
7. Windows will say that it could not find an updated driver, click on Other Locations.
8. Under copy files from: type a:\piix4 and press Enter.
9. Windows will tell you that it has found the Intel 82371AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller, click on Finish.
10. Remove the floppy disk from your computer and click on Yes to restart your computer.
11. Once you are back into Windows 95 double click on the System icon in Control Panel.
12. Click on the Device Manager tab.
13. Click on the + symbol next to Hard Disk Controllers and then click once on Intel 82371AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller to highlight and then click on Properties.
14. Click on the Settings tab. Under Dual IDE Channel select Only Primary IDE Channel Enabled.
15. Click on OK.
16. You will be prompted to restart the computer, click on Yes and your computer will restart.

Updating the Power Management Controller

1. From Control Panel double click on the System icon.
2. Click on the Device Manager tab.
3. Click on the + symbol next to Other Devices and then click once on PCI Bridge to highlight it and then click on Properties.
4. Click on the Driver tab and then click on Update Driver, this will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
5. Insert the XL disk labeled Piix4, CD-ROM, Mouse, Modem, Video.
6. Yes should be selected, click on Next.
7. Windows will say that it could not find an updated driver, click on Other Locations.
8. Under copy files from: type a:\piix4 and press Enter.
9. Windows will tell you that it has found the Intel 82371AB Power Management Controller, click on Finish.
10. Click on Close and then on OK.
11. In the upper left hand corner of the Control Panel window click on File and click on Close.
12. Remove the floppy disk from your computer.

Updating the Universal Serial Bus Controller

1. Put the Windows 95 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
2. Click on the Start button and select Run.
3. Type in D:\other\usb\usbsupp.exe and press Enter.
4. Windows will ask you if you want to install Microsoft USB Supplement. Click on Yes.
5. Read the License agreement, if you agree then click on Yes.
6. The Setup will run Scandisk and then copy some files. When it is done the Microsoft USB Supplement window will appear and notify you that it is complete. Windows will then want you to restart. Click on OK.
7. The reboot may appear to hang but it is updating files.
8. Once your computer has rebooted into Windows 95 and you are at the your desktop click on the Start button then Settings and then Control Panel. Double click on the System icon.
9. Click on Device Manager tab.
10. Click on the + symbol next to Other Devices and Highlight PCI Universal Serial Bus and click Properties.
11. Click on the Driver tab and then click on Update Driver, this will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
12. Insert the XL disk labeled Piix4, CD-ROM, Mouse, Modem, Video.
13. Yes should be selected, click on next.
14. Windows will say that it could not find an updated driver, click on Other Locations.
15. Under copy files from: type a:\piix4 and press Enter.
16. Windows will tell you that it has found the Intel 82371AB PCI to USB Host Controller, click on Finish.
17. Windows will say that it could not find the file "uhcd.sys". Under Copy Files From: type c:\windows\system and press Enter. The installation will complete.
18. USB has successfully been installed.
19. Remove the diskette and CD-ROM from your computer.

Enabling CardBus PCMCIA Support

1. From Control Panel double click on the System icon.
2. Click on the Device Manager tab.
3. PCMCIA Socket should have 3 devices listed underneath it.
4. Two Texas Instruments PCI-1131 CardBus Controllers and one PCIC or Compatible PCMCIA Controller will have red Xs on them.
5. Highlight the PCIC or Compatible PCMCIA Controller and click Remove.
6. Windows will ask you to confirm deletion, click on OK.
7. Highlight the first Texas Instruments PCI-1131 CardBus Controller by clicking it once and click on Properties.
8. Remove the check in Disable in this hardware profile and click on OK. This will bring up the PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard. No should be selected, click on Next. Select No again and click Next. Now click on Finish.
9. Windows will ask you to shutdown, click on Yes.
10. The system will power off; your PCMCIA is now enabled.

Updating the LT WinModem

1. Turn your computer on. Once your computer has rebooted click on the Start button then Settings and then Control Panel. Double click on the System icon.
2. Click on the Device Manager tab.
3. Click on the + symbol next to Other Devices and then click once on the Second Unknown Device to highlight it and then click on Properties.
4. Click on the Driver tab and then click on Update Driver, this will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
5. Insert the XL disk labeled Piix4, CD-ROM, Mouse, Modem, Video.
6. Yes should be selected, click on Next.
7. Windows will say that it could not find an updated driver, click on Other Locations.
8. Under copy files from: type a:\modem and press Enter. Windows will tell you that it has found the LT WinModem, click on Finish.
9. Windows will say that the LT WinModem disk is required now. Click on OK.
10. Under copy files from: type a:\modem and press Enter. Windows will tell you that it has found the Wave Device for Voice Modem, click on Finish.
11. Click on Close and remove the floppy disk from your computer.

Updating the Yamaha Sound System

1. Click on the + symbol next to Other Devices and then click once on the remaining Unknown Device to highlight it and then click on Properties.
2. Click on the Driver tab and then click on Update Driver, this will bring up the Update Device Driver Wizard.
3. Insert the XL disk labeled Audio, Windows 95, DOS.
4. Yes should be selected, click on Next.
5. Windows will tell you that it has found the Yamaha OPL3-Sax Sound System, click on Finish.
6. Windows will ask you to insert the disk labeled OPL3-Sax, click OK.
7. Under copying files from: type a:\ and press Enter.
8. Windows will now ask you for the Windows 95 CD-ROM, click on OK.
9. Under copying files from: type c:\drivers\cabs and press Enter.
10. Click on Close and then on OK.
11. In Control Panel double click on Multimedia.
12. Click on the Midi tab.
13. Under Single Instrument highlight Yamaha OPL3-Sax SoftSynth by clicking on it once and then click on Apply.
14. Click on OK and then restart your computer by clicking Start then Shutdown, select Restart Computer and click on Yes.
15. Remove the floppy disk from your computer.

Installing Infrared Support

1. From Control Panel double click on Add New Hardware.
2. Click on Next.
3. Windows will ask you if you want Windows to search for new hardware. Click on the No option to highlight it and the click on Next.
4. The next screen will prompt you to select the type you to select the type of hardware you want to install. Click once on Infrared and then on Next.
5. Click on Next on the following screen to start the Add Infrared Device Wizard.
6. You will now be asked to specify the Manufacturer and Mode. Standard Infrared Devices should be highlighted under Manufacturers and Built in Infrared Port on Laptop or Desktop should be selected under Model. Click on Next.
7. Make a note of the Virtual ports, one for the Infrared Serial (COM) port and one for the Infrared Printer (LPT) Port. These are the settings you will use to connect to other devices. Click on Next.
8. Click on Finish, you have completed the installation of the Infrared Device.

Installing Internet Explorer

To reinstall the Internet Explorer 4.0 portion of your operating system you will need to have you Internet Explorer 4.0 CD available. This is not needed for your WinBook XL to function properly but it was on your hard drive when you originally purchased the computer. Microsoft has made Internet Explore 4.0 available to you. If you don’t have your CD or didn’t get one with the computer it is available for you to download at their website, http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40/download/win95.htm

Once you have the Internet Explorer files available, either on your hard drive or CD, run the IE4setup or click on the Install Internet Explorer 4.0 option from the auto-run off of your Internet Explorer 4.0 CD. When questioned, choose the full install to have all of the features that were originally installed on your computer when it shipped.
