How to troubleshoot sound on the
Winbook FX

- Turn the computer off
- Turn the computer over and remove the 2-inch by 2-inch square cover.
- Remove and reseat the sound card 5 times. If you see 2 beige sockets
then you do not have a sound card installed in the computer. If this
is the case, you do not need to continue with this document.
- After reseating the sound card, replace the cover.
- Turn the computer on.
- Press the F8 key when you see the message "Starting Windows
95
"
- From the Start Up menu, choose the option for Safe Mode Command Prompt
Only.
- At the C:\> press the Ctrl-Alt-s keys. This will take you
to the BIOS Setup. In the Phoenix Setup Utility, press the Page Down
key twice and verify the following are correct:
Internal Audio is Enabled
Audio IRQ is set to IRQ5
If any values are wrong use the plus (+) key to change them.
- Press the Esc key and the F4 key to Save values, exit SETUP, and reboot.
- Windows 95 will load.
- Rotate the volume control beneath the floppy drive towards you.
- If there is still no sound after booting, double click on the Speaker
icon on the Taskbar. Mute all the volume controls and close the Speaker
properties.
- Double click on the Speaker icon again on the Taskbar and un-mute
all the mute boxes and close the speaker properties.
- Rotate the volume control beneath the floppy drive towards you, again.
- Click on the Start Button, Settings and then Control Panel. Double
click on the System icon.
- In the System Properties, single click on the Device Manager.
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to Sound, video and game controllers
and then double click on the ESS ES1688 AudioDrive.
- If you do not have a Sound, video and game controllers heading, refer
to WinBook Tech Article TNXP5019 for proper driver installation.
- Single click on Resources and remove the check mark in Use automatic
settings. Move the Setting based on: to Basic Configuration 1 by using
the up/down arrow keys next to the box.
- Verify the following resources are correct.
Input/Output is set to 0220-022F
Input/Output is set to 0388-038B
Interrupt Request is set to 5
Direct Memory Access is set to 01
If any of these values are wrong, double click on the wrong resource
and use the up arrow buttons next to the Value box to change the resource
to the correct value. Click on the OK button and change any other
resource that is set wrong. Press OK to exit the ESS 1688 AudioDrive
Properties.
- If there is still no sound, call Technical Support for further help.
