NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

  • Click on Start, go to Settings, and click on Control Panel. In the control panel, double click on the System icon. In the system properties, click on the Device Manager tab.
  • Look through the device manager to find your PCMCIA Card. Note: This is not the PCMCIA socket. For example, if you have a PCMCIA modem installed, look under Modems to find it.
  • Is the PC Card listed in the device manager? If yes then remove the PC Card listing by clicking on the Listing to highlight it, and then clicking on the Remove button. It will ask you to confirm that you are going to remove this device from your system, click on Yes.
  • Click on Close to exit out of the Device Manager, and close out of any programs that you are currently running. Next click on Start, select Shut Down, put a check next to Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode, and then click on OK.
  • This should take you to a C:\WINDOWS\> prompt. Type CD SYSTEM and hit Enter. At the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\> prompt, type DIR SOCKETSV.VXD and hit Enter.
  • One file should be found. The file size should be 21K. If it is NOT 21K, then go to http://www.winbookcorp.com and download the file XP5-VXD and follow the instructions that come with that file to install the correct SOCKETSV.VXD file. If the SOCKETSV.VXD is not 21K, your PCMCIA cards will not work!
  • If this file is the correct size, turn off the computer, eject the PCMCIA card from the system and turn the machine back on.
  • When Windows comes back up, click on Start, go to Settings, and click on Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double click on the System icon. In the system properties, click on the Device Manager tab.
  • If you have a sound card installed, double click on Sound, video and game Controllers. Click on the resources tab. Check to make sure that the settings are based on Basic Configuration 1. Once on Basic Configuration 1, verify that the resource settings match the ones below. When they do, click on Close

I/O 220—22f,
I/O 388—38b,
IRQ 5
DMA 1

  • Still in the Device Manager, double click on the PCMCIA Socket listing. Under PCMCIA Socket, a PCIC or Compatible PCMCIA Controller should be listed.
  • Double click on the PCIC or Compatible PCMCIA controller.
  • Click on the Resources tab. Make sure that the Interrupt Request is set to 9 and that the input/output range is set to 03E0—03E1. If the settings on your WinBook do not match the settings listed here, adjust your WinBook settings to make them look the same.
  • When the resource settings match, click on Close, to get out to the PCMCIA Socket properties, and then click on Close again to exit out of the Device Manager.
  • Click on Start, select Shut Down, highlight Restart the Computer and then click on OK. This will make any changes that you have made to your system resources permanent.
  • When windows comes back up, insert your PCMCIA card. Windows should find new hardware and you should be able to install the drivers for your card.
  • If you encounter any problems during this process, please call Technical Support at 1-800-468-1225 and a representative will be able to assist you further.
