You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a BACKUP of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure.

WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

This procedure will delete all data currently on the computer!

  1. Boot your XP5 off the Windows 95 setup boot disk.
  2. You should get the Windows 95 setup screen
  3. Press F3 twice to exit the setup
  4. You should be at an A:\> prompt
  5. Type fdisk and press enter.
  6. If it asks you to enable large disk support tell it yes.
  7. Next choose the delete partition option (option #3).
  8. Next choose the delete primary DOS partition option (option 1).
  9. Fdisk will then ask you what partition you want to delete. Tell it partition 1.
  10. It will then ask you to enter the volume label. Enter the volume label (it will be listed near the top of the fdisk screen).
  11. It will then ask you to confirm deletion. Tell it yes and press ENTER.
  12. Exit fdisk by pressing ESC twice.
  13. The computer should reboot off the Windows 95 setup boot disk.
  14. Once the windows setup screen is up press the F3 key twice.
  15. You should be at an A:\> prompt.
  16. Type fdisk and press ENTER.
  17. If it asks you to enable large disk support tell it yes.
  18. Next choose the create partition option (option 1).
  19. Next choose the create primary DOS partition option (option 1).
  20. It will next ask you for a volume label you can enter on or leave it blank.
  21. It will then ask you if you want to make the partition active. Tell it yes
  22. Next reboot the computer with the Windows setup boot disk in the floppy drive.
  23. After the Windows 95 setup screen comes up press F3 twice.
  24. You should be at an A:\> prompt.
  25. Type format /u c: and press ENTER.
  26. The computer will ask you if you want to format the C drive.
  27. Tell it yes.
  28. After the format is complete reboot the computer with the Windows 95 setup boot disk in the floppy drive.
  29. Follow the instructions to finish the installation of Windows 95.

Enabling PCMCIA Support

  1. After installation is complete reboot the computer.
  2. After the computer is booted click on the start button.
  3. Choose programs and MS-DOS PROMPT
  4. Insert the XP5-VXD disk into the floppy drive.
  5. Type a: and press enter.
  6. Next type install and press enter.
  7. The laptop will copy some files.
  8. Type exit and press enter.
  9. This should bring you back to Windows 95.
  10. Go to the My Computer icon and click on it with your right mouse button.
  11. Choose the properties option and click on it with the left mouse button.
  12. Click on the Device Manager heading.
  13. You should see a red X through the heading PCI or compatible PCMCIA controller.
  14. Double click on the PCI or compatible PCMCIA controller.
  15. Click on Disable in this Hardware Profile to remove the check from the box.
  16. After the check is removed click O.K.
  17. Select the Next button from the PC Card Wizard.
  18. Again select the Next button from the PC Card Wizard.
  19. Select Finish from the PC Card Wizard.
  20. Select yes to restart your computer.
