Installing the Sound Card:
- Turn off your WinBook laptop.
- Disconnect all external peripherals.
- Turn the unit over so you are looking
at the bottom of the laptop.
- Carefully remove the 2 inch by 2 inch
small square panel to reveal the insert socket for the sound card on
the motherboard. This is directly underneath the WinBook XP label on
the bottom of the WinBook Laptop.
- If you look at the ESS 488 sound card
there are two small white connection sockets that fit into the receptacle
sockets on the motherboard.
- Snap the sound card into the sockets at
a 45-degree angle.
- Make sure the sound card is securely in
place.
- Replace the 2 inch by 2 inch sound card
laptop case cover.
Installing ESS Sound Card Driver in Windows 95:
- Turn on the laptop.
- Once the unit is in Windows click on Start,
Settings and then control panel.
- In control panel double click on Add New
Hardware.
- Click on Next.
- You should then get a screen that lets
you choose whether or not you want windows to search for your hardware.
Select the No and Click on Next.
- You will now have a listing of hardware
types. Choose Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and click on
Next .
- You will now have a listing of manufactures
and models. Choose ESS Technologies Inc. as the manufacturer
and the ESS ES488 Audio Drive as the model.
- After selecting the Manufacture and Model
click on next.
- You will then be shown a screen that lists
the resources windows will use. Click on Next.
- You will be on a finish screen. Click
on finish
- You will now be asked if you want to shut
down, click on No.
- In Control Panel double click on the System
icon.
- Click on the device manger tab.
- In device manager click on the ESS
488 AUDIO DRIVE it is located under the SOUND VIDEO GAME CONTROLLERS
heading.
- After the ESS 488 Audio Drive is highlighted
click on Properties.
- Click on the resources tab.
- Remove the check from the box next to
Use Automatic Settings.
- The resources list on the screen should
have 2 I/O ranges, 1 IRQ, 1 DMA. If it does not you will need to change
the basic configuration setting until it matches the above configuration.
(Basic configuration 0001 usually works)
- Once it has 2 I/O ranges, 1 IRQ, 1 DMA
you will need to change the resources to be the following:
- I/O 0220-022f
- I/O 0388-038b
- IRQ 5
- DMA 1
- After the resources have been set close
out of device manager.
- Windows will give you a message that you
have adjusted one or more resources, click on O.K.
Adjusting the BIOS Settings:
- Click Start, Shutdown and select the Restart
in start in MS-DOS mode shut down option.
- At a dos prompt, hold down the CTRL+ALT+S
keys This will bring up your BIOS Screen.
- Press the PgDn ey twice to view page 3.
- Enable the audio/sound card setting. Adjust
the IRQ to 5.
- Press the ESC key and then press the F4
key.
- You should now have sound. If there is
no sound and you do not have any external speakers plugged in, try turning
the volume control knob toward the front of the computer. The volume
control knob is located underneath the floppy drive.
