Do the following to install the sound card for your XP in Windows 95

Installing the Sound Card:

  1. Turn off your WinBook laptop.
  2. Disconnect all external peripherals.
  3. Turn the unit over so you are looking at the bottom of the laptop.
  4. Carefully remove the 2 inch by 2 inch small square panel to reveal the insert socket for the sound card on the motherboard. This is directly underneath the WinBook XP label on the bottom of the WinBook Laptop.
  5. If you look at the ESS 688 sound card there are two small white connection sockets that fit into the receptacle sockets on the motherboard.
  6. Snap the sound card into the sockets at a 45-degree angle.
  7. Make sure the sound card is securely in place.
  8. Replace the 2 inch by 2 inch sound card laptop case cover.

Installing the Driver:

  1. Boot your unit into windows.
  2. Click on start, settings, and then control panel.
  3. In control panel double click on Add New Hardware.
  4. Click on Next.
  5. You should get a screen that lets you choose whether or not you want windows to search for your hardware. Select the NO then click on Next.
  6. You will now have a listing of hardware types. Click on Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and then click on next.
  7. You will now have a listing of manufactures and models. Select ESS Technologies Inc. as the manufacturer and the ESS ES1688 Audio Drive as the model.
  8. Click on next.
  9. You will see a screen that lists the resources windows will use. Click on Next.
  10. You will then be on a finish screen. Click Finish
  11. You will now be asked if you want to shut down, click on No
  12. In Control Panel double click on System.
  13. Click on the device manger tab.
  14. In device manager highlight the ESS 1688 Audio Drive by clicking on it once, it is listed under the Sound Video Game Controllers heading.
  15. After the ESS 1688 Audio Drive is highlighted click on Properties.
  16. Click on the Resources Tab.
  17. Remove the check from box next to Use Automatic Settings.
  18. The resources list on the screen should have 2 I/O ranges, 1 IRQ, and 1 DMA. If it does not you will need to change the basic configuration setting until it matches the above configuration. (Basic configuration 0001 usually works)
  19. Once it has 2 I/O ranges, 1 IRQ, 1 DMA you will need to change the resources to be the following:
    • I/O 0220-022f
    • I/O 0388-038b
    • IRQ 5
    • DMA 1
  20. After the resources have been set close the sound card properties.
  21. Windows will give you a message that you have adjusted one or more resources manually, click on OK.
  22. From the shut down menu select the Restart In MS-DOS Mode option.
  23. This will bring you to a dos prompt. Press Ctrl+Alt+S at the same time to enter the system BIOS.
  24. Page down to page 3 and make sure that internal audio is enabled and on IRQ 5 if it is not arrow down to the heading and press the space bar to change the settings
  25. After the settings are correct press the Esc key the press F4. This will reboot the system
  26. You should now have sound.
