In getting rid of corrupted entries or other problems with the System Registry in Windows 95 the following steps must be taken:

  1. Click on Start, Shutdown, and then select Restart in MS-DOS Mode.
  2. Type attrib -h -s -r system.dat and then press Enter.
  3. Note: The 0 in the filename extensions below are ZEROS, not the letter O.

  4. Press the F3 key, backspace over the t, type a 0 in it's place and then press Enter.
  5. Press the F3 key, backspace over SYSTEM.DA0, type user.dat in it's place and then press ENTER.
  6. Press the F3 key, backspace over the T, type a 0 in it's place and then press Enter.
  7. Press the F3 key, backspace over USER.DA0, type c:\drvspace.bin in it's place and the press Enter.
  8. Type del system.dat and then press Enter
  9. Type del system.da0 and then press Enter
  10. Type del user.dat and then press Enter
  11. Type del user.da0 and then press Enter
  12. Type del c:\drvspace.bin and then press Enter
  13. You can now start a reinstall of Windows 95 which will replace your registry.
