Installing The ESS 688 Sound Card
in Windows 95 on the WinBook XP

Installing the Sound Card:
- Turn off your WinBook laptop.
- Disconnect all external peripherals.
- Turn the unit over so you are looking at the bottom
of the laptop.
- Carefully remove the 2 inch by 2 inch small square
panel to reveal the insert socket for the sound card on the motherboard.
This is directly underneath the WinBook XP label on the bottom of the
WinBook Laptop.
- If you look at the ESS 688 sound card there are
two small white connection sockets that fit into the receptacle sockets
on the motherboard.
- Snap the sound card into the sockets at a 45-degree
angle.
- Make sure the sound card is securely in place.
- Replace the 2 inch by 2 inch sound card laptop
case cover.
Installing the Driver:
- Boot your unit into Windows.
- Click on Start, Settings and then Control Panel.
- In control panel double click on Add New Hardware.
- Click on Next.
- When asked if you would like windows to search
for your hardware click on No then on Next.
- You will now have a listing of hardware types.
Click on Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and then Next .
- You will now have a listing of manufactures and
models. Click on ESS Technologies Inc. as the manufacturer and ESS ES688
Audio Drive as the model.
- After selecting the Manufacture and Model click
on Next.
- You will then be shown a screen that lists the
resources windows will use. Click on Next.
- Click finish
- Click on No.
- In Control panel, double click on system to bring
up System Properties.
- Click on the Device Manger tab.
- In device double click on the plus symbol next
to Sound Video And Game Controllers and then click once on ESS 688 Audio
Drive.
- Click on properties.
- Click on the Resources tab.
- Remove the check from box next to use automatic
settings by clicking on it once.
- The resources listed on the screen should have
2 I/O ranges, 1 IRQ, 1 DMA. If it does not you will need to change the
basic configuration setting until it matches the above configuration.
(Basic configuration 0001 usually works)
- Once it has 2 I/O ranges, 1 IRQ, 1 DMA you will
need to change the resources to match the following:
- I/O 0220-022f
- I/O 0388-038b
- IRQ 5
- DMA 1
- After the resources have been set close out of
device manager.
- Windows will give you a message that you have adjusted
one or more resources manually, click on OK.
- Click on Start, shut down, and then select Restart
In MS-DOS Mode, click on OK.
- This will bring you to a dos prompt. Press Ctrl+Alt+S
at the same time to enter the system BIOS.
- Page down to page 3 and make sure that internal
audio is enabled and on IRQ 5 if it is not arrow down to the heading
and press the Space Bar to change the settings
- After the settings are correct press the Esc
key and then press F4. This will reboot the system
