NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

WinBook does not support running MS-DOS based programs under Windows 95. This is to be used only as a guide to illustrate how this might be done.

  1. Install or copy the files needed to run the DOS program. For example, when installing Links386 go to Start Run D:\INSTALL
  2. Run Windows Explorer. Go to Start, Programs, Windows Explorer
  3. Go to the Folder where the .EXE file is. In this example the folder is Links386.
  4. Click with the right mouse button on the .EXE file that will run the program.
  5. Go to Properties and then Program.
  6. In here, you can change the settings to adapt it to the needs of yourself and the program.
  7. If you click the Advanced button, you can adjust the properties of the DOS settings such as drivers.
  8. In the Links386 example, I have MS-DOS mode checked. This will completely restart the computer into DOS mode, getting Windows completely out of the way. This is generally the safest way to run DOS programs but will not allow you to multi-task.
  9. You can also use the current CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT information or you can specify your own. This is helpful if there is a special driver that needs to be loaded only for one particular program.
  10. If you choose to specify a new MS-DOS configuration, you can also click on the configuration button, which will give you options for things such as expanded memory and mouse.
  11. Once you click on OK you will have another file of the same name but it will have an MS-DOS icon. When you double click this new icon it will automatically launch your program in the configuration you specified.
