Installing the Sound Card

  1. Turn off your WinBook laptop.
  2. Disconnect all external peripherals.
  3. Turn the unit over so you are looking at the bottom of the laptop.
  4. Carefully remove the 2 inch by 2 inch small square panel to reveal the insert socket for the sound card on the motherboard. This is directly underneath the WinBook XP label on the bottom of the WinBook Laptop.
  5. If you look at the ESS 488 sound card there are two small white connection sockets that fit into the receptacle sockets on the motherboard.
  6. Snap the sound card into the sockets at a 45-degree angle.
  7. Make sure the sound card is securely in place.
  8. Replace the 2 inch by 2 inch sound card laptop case cover.

 

Adjusting the BIOS Settings

  1. Turn on you WinBook laptop.
  2. If your unit boots directly into Windows, exit windows to a dos prompt.
  3. At a dos prompt, hold down the CTRL key and the ALT key at the same time and press the S key. This will bring up your BIOS Screen.
  4. Press the PGDN key twice to view page 3.
  5. Enable the audio/sound card setting. Adjust the IRQ to 5.
  6. Press the ESC key and then press the F4 key.
  7. Your unit will reboot.

 

Installing ESS Software

  1. Boot into Windows 3.11
  2. Insert disk 1 of your ESS Audio Applications disks into the floppy drive.
  3. In Windows click on File and choose Run.
  4. Type in A:\setup and press enter.
  5. This will bring up the audio applications setup screen. Click Continue.
  6. This will bring up a screen that has your installation options. Choose the Driver Install.
  7. The next screen asks the board settings. Choose Custom Board Configuration and set the IRQ to 5.
  8. Choose to restart Windows.
  9. After the driver has been installed your autoexec.bat will look similar to the one below

10. After rebooting you should have sound on your WinBook XP.
