Subject: Installing a BusToaster SCSI and Reno CD Rom Drive in DOS and Win 3.x on an XP5

Items you will need to complete this are:

WinBook XP5
DOS and Windows installed
XP5-SUP file on a bootable disk

  1. Insert the diskette with the XP5-SUP file extracted on it into the floppy drive.
  2. Turn the computer on.
  3. The computer will boot up to a menu with 9 items on it.
  4. Type "8" and press "Enter".
  5. This will copy the dos based PCMCIA drivers to the hard drive and make the appropriate changes to your config.sys file.
  6. Once it finishes copying files it will come back to a "c:" prompt.
  7. Now you want check the config.sys to confirm the changes made during installation by typing "edit config.sys".
  8. The config.sys file should look similar to this:
  9. Device=c:\windows\himem.sys

    Device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems x=d000-dfff

    Device=c:\xp5pcm\ssvadem.exe

    Device=c:\xp5pcm\cs.exe

    Device=c:\xp5pcm\csalloc.exe

    Device=c:\xp5pcm\cardid.exe

  10. If any of these lines are not different or not present then make it match this.
  11. Once the config.sys is set correctly save this file by using the "Alt" and "F" keys and then choose "Save" . Then use the same key strokes and choose "Exit".
  12. Next change to the A: drive by typing "A:" at the c: prompt.
  13. Now insert the installation disk that came with the Bus Toaster SCSI card.
  14. At the A: type "install" and press "Enter".
  15. The next screen will ask you to confirm the installation of the Bus Toaster driver into the "BT" directory, press "Enter" to continue.
  16. Then It will prompt that it will make changes to the config.sys, press "Y" for yes.
  17. Next it will make 2 tones, then press "R" to reboot the system making sure that the floppy disk is out of the floppy drive.
  18. The system will reboot and then prompt to insert the Bus Toaster card.
  19. Insert the card and then the unit will continue the boot process.
  20. At this point if Windows is installed proceed with the installation of the "CorelSCSI! 2" disks (1-5) within Windows.
  21. This is done by choosing "Run" from the "File " menu and then typing "A:setup".

Reno External CD-ROM Hardware Installation

  1. Turn off and unplug your computer
  2. Your Reno CD-ROM comes with a small Battery Base that is referred to as a Docking Station. Align the connectors on the back of the CD-ROM drive to the connectors of the front of the docking station. Push the two components together until they latch.
  3. Connect the interface cable to the Bustoaster SCSI card
  4. Insert the Bustoaster card into the WinBook pcmcia card slot.
  5. Connect the power adapter cable to docking station of the Reno CD-ROM
  6. Plug the square a/c power adapter transformer into a 115-volt AC outlet. (This is a normal household electrical outlet.)
  7. If you have a sound card in your WinBook you can connect the Reno CD-ROM line out to the audio line in on your WinBook. (The Audio line in is on the left side of your WinBook if you are using the WinBook XP or WinBook XP5.)

Reno External CD-ROM Software Installation

  1. Turn on your WinBook and boot into Windows 3.xx.
  2. Insert the install disk into the floppy drive in your WinBook.
  3. From Windows’ Program Manager, select File.
  4. Select Run and type A:\setup.exe
  5. Follow the instructions on the laptop display to install the Reno CD-ROM software.
