Fdisk, Format and Reinstall of DOS
and Windows 3.1x on a WinBook XP5

To complete this procedure you will need the following materials.
- MS-DOS 6.22 disks
- Microsoft Windows 3.11 Disks
- Microsoft Windows 3.11 users manual with Product ID
- WinBook XP5 Driver Disks (VGA, and Logitech)
Delete existing hard drive partition
- Boot to the MS-DOS 'Disk 1
- Setup' diskette
- When the MS-DOS 6.22 Setup
screen appears, press F3 twice to exit
- At the A: prompt type Fdisk
- Press 3 to delete existing
DOS partition
- Press 1 to delete the primary
dos partition
- Press 1 to select primary dos
partition
- Type what appears below the
'Volume Label' column near the top of the screen when prompted for VOLUME
LABEL
- Press Y to verify deletion
of the partition
- The primary DOS partition has
been deleted. Press ESC twice and fdisk should then return you to the
fdisk main screen.
- Press 1 to create a partition
- Press 1 to create a primary
partition.
- When it asks you if you want
to make the partition active say yes.
- You should get the message
"primary partition created"
- Press escape three times and
the unit should reboot.
Install MS-DOS 6.22
- Boot to the MS-DOS "Disk
1 - Setup" diskette
- When the MS-DOS 6.22 Setup
screen appears press the 'ENTER' key
- Press the ENTER again to configure
unallocated disk space
- Press ENTER again to restart
your computer
- The MS-DOS setup program will
begin formatting your hard drive.
- Press ENTER to confirm the
system settings
- Press ENTER again to create
the C:\DOS directory
- Follow the on-screen prompts
to finish installing MS-DOS
Install Windows 3.11
- After MS-DOS is finished booting,
insert the Windows 3.11 Disk 1 in to the A: drive.
- Type a:\ and press ENTER
then type setup and press ENTERto start the Windows 3.11 Setup
program
- Press ENTER twice to start
installing the Windows files to your hard drive.
- Follow the on-screen prompts
- If you have a printer attached
you can install it when the 'Printer Installation' box appears. If you
do not have a printer, just click on 'CANCEL'
- If you are connected to a network
you will need to contact your Network Administrator to complete the
Network Setup. If you are not connected to a Network or do not plan
to setup a network connection now, click on CONTINUE.
- When the 'Set Up Applications'
box appears click on OK
- To complete the Windows Setup
click on Skip Tutorial
- Then click on Restart Computer
after removing any disk in the A: drive.
- Your computer will then reboot
to a DOS prompt.
- To have your computer automatically
load Windows 3.11 when you turn on the computer, add win to the end
of your autoexec.bat file.
Setup Display Drivers
- Put the WinBook XP5 VGA Driver
Disk into the A: drive
- Select RUN from the file menu
of your Windows Program Manager. Type a:\setup
- When the Display Driver Setup
Program appears, press any key to continue
- Press ENTER to select the Windows
Version 3.1 drivers
- Press ENTER again to chose
All Resolutions
- Press the END key to start
the installation of the driver files
- Press ENTER to install to the
C:\WINDOWS directory
- Press any key when the 'Installation
is done!' Screen appears
- Press ESC and then press Y
to exit back to Windows
- Double-click on the Main program
group
- Double-click on the Windows
Setup icon
- Go to the Options menu and
click on Change System Settings
- Click the down arrow next to
the Display setting.
- Select * CHIPS 655DGX-VL/ISA
640x480x256 from the list and then click 'OK'
- Click the Current button
- Then click on Restart Windows
to complete the display driver setup.
