Subject: How To Troubleshoot Sound on the WinBook XP

  1. Turn the computer off
  2. Turn the computer over and remove the 2-inch by 2-inch square cover.
  3. Remove and reseat the sound card 5 times. If you see two beige sockets then you do not have a sound card installed in the computer. If this is the case, you do not need to continue with the rest of this document.
  4. After reseating the sound card, reinstall the cover back into place.
  5. Turn the computer back on and press the F8 key when you see the message, "Starting Windows 95..."
  6. Choose the option for Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Start Up menu and then press Enter.
  7. At the C:\> prompt press the Ctrl+Alt+S keys. In the Phoenix Setup Utility, press the PgDn key twice and verify that the following settings are correct:
    • Internal Audio is Enabled
    • Audio IRQ is set to IRQ5
  8. If any values are wrong use the plus (+) key to change them.
  9. Press the Esc key and then the F4 key to Save values, exit setup, and reboot.
  10. Rotate the volume control beneath the floppy drive towards you.
  11. If there is still no sound after booting, double click on the Speaker icon on the Taskbar. Mute all the volume controls and close the Speaker properties.
  12. Double click on the Speaker icon again on the Taskbar and un-mute all the mute boxes and close the speaker properties.
  13. Rotate the volume control beneath the floppy drive towards you again.
  14. Click on the Start, Settings, and then Control Panel. Double click on the System icon.
  15. In the System Properties, single click on the Device Manager.
  16. Click on the plus sign (+) next to Sound, Video And Game Controllers and then double click on the ESS ES688 AudioDrive.
  17. If you do not have a Sound, Video And Game Controllers heading refer to WinBook Tech Article TNXP013 for proper driver installation.
  18. Single click on Resources and remove the check mark in Use Automatic Settings. Move the Settings based on to Basic Configuration 1 by using the down arrow button next to the box.
  19. Verify the following resources are correct:
    • Input/Output is set to 0220-022F
    • Input/Output is set to 0388-038B
    • Interrupt Request is set to 5
    • Direct Memory Access is set to 01
  20. If any of these values are wrong, double click on the wrong resource and use the up/down arrow buttons next to the Value box to change the resource to the correct value. Click on the OK button and change any other resource that is set wrong. Press OK to exit the ESS 688 AudioDrive Properties.
  21. Click on Start, Shutdown, and then choose Restart The Computer In MS-DOS Mode.
  22. Rotate the volume control beneath the floppy drive towards you.
  23. If there is still no sound, call Technical Support for further help.
