WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal
data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning:
WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during
this process.

Warning: Following this WinBook Tech Article will remove all data
from the current hard drive. If possible back up all critical data before
proceeding with the instructions below.
To complete this procedure you will need the following materials.
- MS-DOS 6.22 disks
- Microsoft Windows
3.1x Disks
- WinBook XP Support
Disk (XP-SUP)
- WinBook XP VGA
Driver Disk (XP-VGA)
- WinBook Logitech
Mouse Driver Disk (LOGI630)
- ESS Audio Disks
1&2 (XP5-ESS1, XP5-ESS2)
Before beginning this procedure make sure you have the latest drivers
and utilities from our web page, or call our Technical Support department
to have us send you these files
Delete existing hard drive partition:
- Turn the computer
off.
- Place the MS-DOS
Disk 1 - Setup diskette in the Floppy drive.
- When the MS-DOS
6.22 Setup screen appears, press F3 twice to exit.
- At the A:\ prompt
type fdisk and the press Enter.
- Type 3 and
then press Enter to delete existing DOS partition.
- Type 1 and
then press Enter to delete the Primary Dos Partition.
- Type 1 and
then press Enter to select Primary Dos Partition, then press Enter.
- Type what appears
below the Volume Label column near the top of the screen when prompted
for Enter Volume Label and then press Enter.
- Type Y to verify
deletion of the partition, then press Enter.
- The primary DOS
partition has been deleted. Press Esc three times and the system should
reboot to the MS-DOS setup screen.
Create Suspend to Disk Partition:
Warning: If you have a 2.0GB or larger hard drive do NOT use
the PHDISK utility. Doing so will damage your hard drive and make it unusable.
If you have a 2.0GB hard drive please skip to the next section.
- Reboot to the MS-DOS
Disk 1 - Setup diskette
- When the MS-DOS
6.22 Setup screen appears, press F3 twice to exit
- Place the WinBook
XP Support disk into the A: drive
- Type phdisk
/create and then press Enter.
- The Phdisk utility
will then create and format your Suspend to Disk partition, when it
is finished an A:\> prompt will appear again.
Create Primary DOS Partition
- Boot to the MS-DOS
Disk 1 - Setup diskette.
- Press F3 twice
to exit the MS-DOS setup.
- Type in fdisk
and then press enter.
- Type 1 and
then press Enter to Create Dos Partition.
- Type 1 and
then press Enter to Create Primary Dos Partition.
- When asked if you
want to make the partition active type Y and then hit Enter.
- Hit Esc three times
to exit fdisk.
Install MS-DOS 6.22:
- Boot to the MS-DOS
Disk 1 - Setup diskette.
- When the MS-DOS
6.22 Setup screen appears press the Enter key.
- Press the Enter
again to configure unallocated disk space.
- Press Enter again
to restart your computer.
- The MS-DOS setup
program will begin formatting your hard drive.
- Press Enter to
confirm the system settings.
- Press Enter again
to create the c:\dos directory.
- Follow the on-screen
prompts to finish installing MS-DOS.
Install Windows 3.1
- After MS-DOS is
finished installing, insert the Windows 3.1 Disk 1 in to the A: drive.
- Type a:\setup
and the press Enter to start the Windows 3.1 Setup program
- Press Enter twice
to start installing the Windows files to your hard drive.
- Follow the on-screen
prompts
- If you have a printer
attached you can install it when the 'Printer Installation' box appears.
If you do not have a printer, just click on Cancel.
- When the Set Up
Applications box appears click on OK
- To complete the
Windows Setup click on Skip Tutorial
- After removing
any disk in the A: drive, click on Reboot
- Your computer will
then reboot to a DOS prompt. Type win and then press Enter to
load windows
- To have your computer
automatically load Windows 3.1 when you turn on the computer, add win
to the end of your Autoexec.Bat file. To do this, type edit c:\autoexec.bat
at a DOS prompt. The DOS Editor program should appear. Use the arrow
keys to go down to the last line in the file. Then press the End key
and then Enter. Type win on the empty line. Press Alt+F to bring
down the File menu, then type x. When it asks you if you want
to save, type y to save the file and exit. The next time you
boot the computer, Windows 3.1x should automatically load.
Install Display Drivers:
- Put the WinBook
XP VGA Driver Disk into the A: drive
- In the Windows
Program Manager choose Run from the File menu.
- Type in a:\setup
and then press Enter
- Click Continue
- Click on All
- Click Continue
- Click on OK
- To change your
display resolution or colors, double-click on the Video Changer icon
in the Video Changer program group, and choose the settings you prefer
Install Mouse Drivers:
- Put the WinBook
XP Logitech Mouse Driver Disk into the A: drive
- In the Windows
Program Manager choose Run from the File menu.
- Type in a:\install
and press Enter
- Click on Install
- Click Continue
to install to the default directory
- Click Continue
again
- Click Continue
to complete the changes to your system files
- Click on Reboot
System to restart with the Logitech drivers
- Remove the disk
in drive A: if it is still in, and click on OK
- The unit will then
restart
Install Audio Drivers:
- Place the ESS Driver
Disk 1 into the A: drive
- In the Windows
Program Manager choose Run from the File menu
- Type in a:\setup
and press Enter
- Click on Continue
- Then click on Driver
Installation
- Click on Automatic
Board Configuration
- Click Restart Windows
- Windows will restart
- In the Windows
Program Manager choose Run from the File menu
- Type in a:\setup
and press Enter
- Click on Continue
- Click on Software
Installation
- Click on OK to
choose the C:\PCAUDIO directory
- Click on Create
Directory
- Click Complete
Installation
- Follow the on screen
instructions and insert Disk 2 when prompted
- When the files
have been installed, the Audio Applications Setup window will appear
on the screen again
- Click on Exit to
finish
