WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal
data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning:
WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during
this process.

Warning: Following this WinBook Tech Article will remove all data
from the current hard drive. If possible back up all critical data before
proceeding with the instructions below.
To complete this procedure you will need the following disks:
- MS-DOS 6.22 disks
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disks
- WinBook SX/DX Utility Disks (SX-UTL1
& SX-UTL2)
Before beginning this procedure make sure you have the latest drivers
and utilities. These can be obtained from our website.
Delete existing hard drive partition:
- Turn the computer off.
- Place the MS-DOS Disk 1 - Setup diskette
in the floppy drive.
- When the MS-DOS 6.22 Setup screen appears,
press F3 twice to exit.
- At the A:> prompt type fdisk
and press Enter.
- Press 3 and then Enter to delete
existing DOS partition.
- Press 1 and then Enter to delete
the PRIMARY DOS PARTITION.
- Press 1 and then Enter to select
PRIMARY DOS PARTITION.
- Type what appears below the Volume Label
column near the top of the screen when prompted for Enter Volume Label
and then press Enter.
- Select 'Y' to verify deletion of the
partition, then press the Enter key.
- The primary DOS partition has been deleted.
Press Esc three times and the system should reboot to the MS-DOS setup
screen.
Install MS-DOS 6.22:
- Boot to the MS-DOS Disk 1 - Setup diskette.
- When the MS-DOS 6.22 Setup screen appears
press the Enter key.
- Press the Enter key again to configure
unallocated disk space.
- Press Enter again to restart your computer.
- The MS-DOS setup program will begin
formatting your hard drive.
- Press Enter to confirm the system settings.
- Press Enter again to create the C:\DOS
directory.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to finish
installing MS-DOS.
Install Windows 3.1
- After MS-DOS is finished booting, insert
the Windows 3.1 Disk 1 in to the A: drive.
- Type a:\setup and press Enter
to start the Windows 3.1 Setup program.
- Press Enter twice to start installing
the Windows files to your hard drive.
- Follow the on-screen prompts.
- If you have a printer attached you can
install it when the Printer Installation box appears. If you do not
have a printer, just click on Cancel.
- When the Setup Applications box appears
click on ok.
- To complete the Windows Setup click
on Skip Tutorial.
- After removing any disk in the A: drive,
click on Reboot.
- Your computer will then reboot to a
DOS prompt. Type win and press enter to load windows.
- To have your computer automatically
load Windows 3.1 when you turn on the computer, add win to the
end of your autoexec.bat file. To do this, type edit c:\autoexec.bat
and then press Enter at a dos prompt. The DOS Editor program should
appear. Use the arrow keys to go down the last line in the file. Then
press the End key, and then Enter. Now type in win
and press enter on the empty line. Then press Alt-F to bring
down the File menu, then press the x key. When it asks you if
you want to save, type y to save the file and exit. The next
time you boot the computer, Windows 3.1 should automatically load.
Install Display Drivers:
- Put the WinBook SX/DX Utility Disk 1
into the A: drive.
- In the Windows Program Manager choose
Run from the File menu.
- Type in a:\install and press
Enter.
- The install program will then copy the
Chips and Technologies display drivers to your hard drive.
- When Windows is back on the screen,
choose Run from the File menu.
- Type in c:\530drv\setup and press
Enter.
- Press Enter to choose the Windows Version
3.1 drivers.
- Press Enter again to choose All Resolutions.
- Then press the end key to start the
install.
- Press Enter again to install to the
C:\WINDOWS directory.
- The drivers will then be copied to your
hard drive
- Press any key to return to the Main
Menu.
- Press the Esc key to exit
- Press Y and then Enter.
- Double-click on the Main program group
in the Windows Program Manager
- Double-click on the Windows Setup icon
- On the Options menu, choose Change System
Settings
- Press the up arrow to scroll through
the display drivers and select * CHIPS 655XX 640x480x256 (530)
- Click on ok.
- Click on Current.
- Click on Restart Windows.
- Windows will then restart with your
new display drivers.
Install MTB Mouse Drivers:
- Put the WinBook SX/DX Utility Disk 1
into the A: drive.
- In the Windows Program Manager choose
'Run' from the File menu.
- Type in a:\mtb\install and press
Enter.
- Press Enter to choose the C:\MTB directory.
- Press Enter to continue.
- The MTB files will then be copied to
your hard drive.
- In the Windows Program Manager choose
Run from the File menu.
- Type sysedit and press Enter.
- The System Configuration Editor will
load.
- Make sure you have the autoexec.bat
window at the top, above the other windows.
- Use the down arrow key to scroll down
to the second to the last line.
- Press Enter to make a new line.
- Type c:\mtb\mtb.com and press
Enter.
- Choose Save from the File menu and then
Choose Exit from the File menu.
