Subject: Reinstalling MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 on the WinBook SLC with Color Display

To complete this procedure you will need the following disks:

  • MS-DOS 6.22 disks
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disks
  • WinBook SLC Utility Disks 1 & 2 (SLC-COL1 & SLC-COL2)

Before beginning this procedure make sure you have the latest drivers and utilities. These can be obtained from our website.

Delete existing hard drive partition:

  1. Turn the computer off.
  2. Place the MS-DOS 'Disk 1 - Setup' diskette in the Floppy drive.
  3. When the MS-DOS 6.22 Setup screen appears, press F3 twice to exit.
  4. At the A: prompt type in fdisk and press enter.
  5. Press 3 and then Enter to delete existing DOS partition.
  6. Press 1 and then Enter to delete the PRIMARY DOS PARTITION.
  7. Press 1 and then Enter to select PRIMARY DOS PARTITION.
  8. Type what appears below the 'Volume Label' column near the top of the screen when prompted for Enter Volume Label and then press Enter.
  9. Press Y to verify deletion of the partition, then press Enter.
  10. The primary DOS partition has been deleted. Press Esc three times and the system should reboot to the MS-DOS setup screen.

Install MS-DOS 6.22:

  1. Boot to the MS-DOS "Disk 1 - Setup" diskette.
  2. When the MS-DOS 6.22 Setup screen appears press the Enter key.
  3. Press the Enter key again to configure unallocated disk space.
  4. Press the Enter key again to restart your computer.
  5. The MS-DOS setup program will begin formatting your hard drive.
  6. Press Enter to confirm the system settings.
  7. Press Enter again to create the C:\DOS directory.
  8. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish installing MS-DOS.

Install Windows 3.1

  1. After MS-DOS is finished booting, insert the Windows 3.1 Disk 1 in to the Floppy drive.
  2. Type a: and press Enter, at the a:\ prompt type setup and press Enter to start the Windows 3.1 Setup program.
  3. Press Enter twice to start installing the Windows files to your hard drive.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. If you have a printer attached you can install it when the Printer Installation box appears. If you do not have a printer, just click on Cancel.
  6. When the Set Up Applications box appears click on OK.
  7. To complete the Windows Setup click on Skip Tutorial.
  8. After removing any disks in the floppy drive, click on Reboot.
  9. Your computer will then reboot to a DOS prompt. Type win and press Enter to load windows.
  10. To have your computer automatically load Windows 3.1 when you turn on the computer type edit c:\autoexec.bat at a dos prompt. The DOS Editor program should appear. Use the arrow keys to go down the last line in the file. Then press the End key and then Enter. Now type in win on the empty line. Press Alt+F to bring down the File menu, then press the x key. When it asks you if you want to save, type Y to save the file and exit. The next time you boot the computer Windows 3.1 should automatically load.

Install Display Drivers:

  1. Boot to Windows.
  2. Put the WinBook SLC Utility Disk 1 into the Floppy drive.
  3. In the Windows Program Manager choose Run from the File menu.
  4. Type in a:\install and press Enter.
  5. Press any key to continue.
  6. The install program will then copy the Chips and Technologies display drivers to your hard drive.
  7. When Windows is back on the screen, choose 'Run' from the File menu.
  8. Type in c:\530drv\setup and press Enter.
  9. Press any key to continue.
  10. Press Enter to choose the Windows Version 3.1 drivers.
  11. Press Enter again to choose All Resolutions.
  12. Press the End key to start the install.
  13. Press Enter again to install to the C:\WINDOWS directory.
  14. The drivers will then be copied to your hard drive.
  15. Press any key to return to the main menu.
  16. Press the Esc key to exit.
  17. Press y.
  18. Double-click on the Main Program group in the Windows Program Manager.
  19. Double-click on the Windows Setup icon.
  20. On the Options menu, choose Change System Settings.
  21. Press the up arrow to scroll through the display drivers and select * CHIPS 655XX 640x480x256 (530).
  22. Click on ok.
  23. Click on Current.
  24. Click on Restart Windows.
  25. Windows will then restart with your new display drivers.

Install MTB Mouse Drivers:

  1. Put the WinBook SLC Utility Disk 2 into the Floppy drive.
  2. In the Windows Program Manager choose Run from the File menu.
  3. Type in a:\mtb\install and press Enter.
  4. Press Enter to choose the C:\MTB directory.
  5. Press Enter to continue.
  6. The MTB files will then be copied to your hard drive.
  7. In the Windows Program Manager choose Run from the File menu.
  8. Type sysedit and then press Enter.
  9. The System Configuration Editor will load.
  10. Make sure you have the autoexec.bat window at the top, above the other windows.
  11. Use the down arrow key to scroll down to the second to the last line.
  12. Press Enter to make a new line.
  13. Type c:\mtb\mtb.com and press Enter.
  14. Choose Save from the File menu.
  15. Then Choose Exit from the File menu.
