To Upgrade Your Hard Drive:
- Back up the installed drive completely. Be sure that you have the
bootable CD-ROM that came with your WinBook notebook.
- Power down the system completely. You should unplug the AC adapter
and remove the battery before removing the drive. Disconnect any attached
peripherals. See Chapter 3 for instructions on removing the battery
from the WinBook notebook.
- Turn the system over. The front of the unit should be facing you.
- The hard disk drive (HDD) compartment is located toward the front
and center of the unit. There is one screw that secures the rail kit
assembly to the unit. Remove the screw and set it in a safe place. (Figure
1)

- The HDD is mounted into a rail kit that is then installed into the
computer. Gently lift the bezel of the rail kit upwards and it will
"click" into the unlock position. Then pull the rail kit bezel
towards you to disengage it from the system.

- There are 4 screws holding the HDD in the bracket. Remove the screws
and set them in a safe place. Angle the bracket off the drive. Remove
the adapter from the pins of the drive.
- Remove the new hard drive from its anti-static bag. You can use the
same anti-static bag to store your old hard drive.
- Connect the adapter to the pins of the new drive. Angle the new drive
into the rail kit. Secure the four screws that hold the HDD to the rail
kit.
- Slide the rail kit back into the computer until the bezel is flush
with the front of the notebook. The bezel must be in the unlocked (raised)
position in order for the rail kit to be completely installed. Do not
force the HDD into place as this can damage the internal connector of
the notebook as well as the pins of the new HDD
- Press down gently on the rail kit bezel until it 'clicks' into the
locked position.
- Replace the Hard Disk Drive compartment cover making sure the screw
hole in the cover lines up with the screw hole in the case. Secure the
cover with the screw.
- Insert your WinBook restore CD into the CD-ROM, DVD or Combo drive.
- When you boot the computer, the recovery program should start automatically.
If it does not, restart the system and press [F2] to enter the Setup
utility. Set the boot devices so that the CD-ROM, DVD or Combo drive
boots before the hard disk drive. See Chapter 7 of your users Manual
if you need more information about the Setup utility. Exit Setup. The
recover program should start now.
- Your WinBook CD-ROM is designed to automatically recover a completely
blank hard drive.
- The recovery program will automatically create the primary partition.
When the drive has been formatted, the complete file recovery process
will start and proceed automatically. Your system will now be restored
to the original shipping configuration. You will need to restore any
files and programs created since you purchased the WinBook notebook.
- Depending on the backup system that you have, you might need to load
the backup software from your original disks before restoring your files.
- Either restore your existing programs, configurations and files from
your backup or reinstall the software from your original disks or CDs.
If you do chose to reinstall from your original disks, you might need
to reset preferences in your programs. It is usually much quicker and
easier to restore from your backup.
