This article describes the process to update the BIOS on the WinBook J1 computer when an external floppy drive is not available. Completing these steps will require the J1 restore CD and the J1 BIOS file J10726.EXE.

 

  1. Right-Click Start, Right-Click Explore on the Menu.
  2. Once the Explorer window opens, Scroll the Left window all the way to the top until the C:\ drive shows on the list.
  3. Highlight C:\.
  4. On the Standard toolbar Click File>New>Folder. In the right window a new folder will appear called "New Folder". The New folder is highlighted. Rename the folder to BIOS then press Enter.
  5. Close the Explorer Window.
  6. Connect to the Internet.
  7. Go to www.winbookcorp.com.
  8. Click on Support on the Website header.
  9. Select the WinBook J Series, then J1 in the pull down menu.
  10. Scroll to the bottom of the WinBook J1 page and Select Drivers.
  11. On the WinBook J1 page select BIOS.
  12. Click on J10726.exe
  13. This will take you to the WinBook J1 BIOS page. Print this page.
  14. Scroll to the bottom of the WinBook J1 BIOS page and Click on J10726.exe.
  15. Download J10726.exe to the BIOS folder on the root directory
  16. Extract the BIOS to the same folder on the root directory (C:\BIOS).
  17. Click on the button Install, to start the extraction process.
  18. Restart the computer and begin tapping F2 to enter the BIOS.
  19. Use the arrow key to highlight BOOT on the menu.
  20. Verify that ATAPI CD-ROM is at the top of list. Press the Escape (ESC) Key.
  21. Insert the Restore CD before saving changes and exiting from the BIOS.
  22. Save changes and exit the BIOS, then start tapping the <F8> key rapidly, about two times per second.
  23. When the Windows startup menu appears select option (6), Safemode Command Prompt Only
  24. Type “C:” (without the quotes) to change the drive to C:\, then Press Enter.
  25. At the C:\ prompt type “CD BIOS” (without the quotes) and then Press Enter.
  26. Type “Flash” (without the quotes) and press Enter.
  27. Follow the on screen instructions. When the bios update is complete follow the prompts to restart the computer and remove the restore CD.
