The following are suggestions to minimize trouble when traveling, and are not required actions for travelers. Q. What if the destination does not have the same kind of printer I use? It is a good idea to load common printer drivers onto your WinBook XL (such as HP Laser Jet and DeskJet drivers). This will allow you to print from many printers at your destination, even if you do not carry your own printer with you. Also, Windows 95 already has support for many common printers. You may want to check to see if you printer is one of these, by contacting your printer manufacturer, or consulting the documentation that came with the printer. Q. What should I do if I cannot boot from my hard drive? Take along a bootable floppy disk. The WinBook XL Boot disk that was provided with your computer will suffice. If you do not have that disk, you can create a boot disk in Windows 95. To do this, click Start>Settings>Control Panel. In Control Panel double click the Add New Hardware icon. In the Add New Hardware window, click the Startup Disk tab. Press Create Disk to create a bootable floppy disk. You will need one blank floppy disk to do this. Q. Should I prepare my data somehow before traveling? Travel can present considerable risks of system shock or theft. Complete a full system backup before traveling. Q. What do I do if I cannot connect my phone line to a standard phone jack? If you do a lot of traveling, you might find it useful to purchase an acoustic coupler for your modem (which hooks to the handset instead of directly to a phone jack), to allow connection even where compatible phone jacks cannot be found. Q. Will my A/C adapter work in other countries? Yes, it is a universal adapter, which means it will automatically adapt to different voltages. Although, you may need a special adapter in order to plug the A/C adapter into the outlet in the country to which you are traveling. Check with your travel agent to determine whether or not you will need one. Q. Should I put my WinBook into the x-ray machine at the airport? It is not recommend. To decrease the risk of theft, as well as damage to your data, hand the computer to an airport attendant for a physical inspection, rather than sending it through the x-ray machine. Q. What can I do to keep the computer safe in my hotel room? Consider purchasing a lock for your WinBook XL. The WinBook XL comes with a slot for connecting a lock located on the left side of your system case and a security anchor on the bottom right side. The lock uses a Kensington Lock. Also, password protect your system (with at least one level of password) to help preserve your data. Q. Is there something I can do make it easier to find my computer? Brand or physically mark your computer to make for easy identification. Q. What should I do to connect to the Internet outside of where I live? If you will be using an Internet provider or other on-line service, call ahead to find out local access numbers for your destination(s). Q. What should I pack with my computer when traveling? We suggest packing the following items: Your A/C adapter/power cord |
