You have a serial mouse and you want to configure the driver that is shipped with the WinBook XL to work with the mouse. The mouse will work in Windows 95, but when you restart in MS-DOS mode, the touchpad / trackpoint work but the serial mouse does not.

  1. With the computer powered off, connect the serial mouse and then turn the unit on and let it boot to Windows normally.
  2. Click the Start button, then click Shutdown on the menu
  3. Click on the option Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and click the OK button. Once the computer loads the items for the MS-DOS mode, you will see a c:\>windows prompt.
  4. Type c:\window\command\mouse.exe /c1 and press the Enter key.
  5. You will be prompted to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
  6. The next time you choose Restart in MS-DOS mode, the serial mouse will be available.
  7. If you also need the mouse available when you boot to DOS using the option Command Prompt Only from the Windows 95 Start Menu, you will need to add the following line to the autoexec.bat file after doing the above:
  8. c:\windows\command\mouse.exe

  9. In Windows, click the Start button, then click Run, and type sysedit in the Open box, and press the Enter key. A number of windows will open, the first one will be the Autoexec.bat file.
  10. If necessary scroll to the bottom of the file and type in the line above.
  11. Click File and then click Save to save the file.
  12. Click File and then click Exit.
  13. The next time you boot the computer and choose the Command Prompt Only option, the serial mouse will be loaded.
