Subject: How to Troubleshoot Sound on the WinBook XL

  1. Turn the computer on and start tapping the DEL key.
  2. Once into the AMIBIOS Setup, go to the Peripheral Setup menu option.
  3. Make sure the following settings are correct:
  4. Setting Resource:

    • Com3 Port(IR) 3E8h
    • IR Mode IrDA
    • IR DMA Channel 3
    • Audio Device Enabled
    • Audio I/O 220h
    • Audio IRQ IRQ 5
    • Audio DMA Channel 1 DMA #0
    • Audio DMA Channel 2 DMA #1
    • FM Synthesizer Enabled
    • MIDI Port 330h
    • WSS Port 530h

    If any of these values are wrong use the Page Up key to change them to the correct value.

  5. Press the Esc key, next press F10, then press Y and then press Enter to save changes and exit. The computer will reboot.
  6. If you still do not have sound, click Start>Settings>Control Panel then double click the System icon.
  7. In the System Properties window, single click on the Device Manager.
  8. Click on the plus (+) sign next to Sound, video and game controllers and then double click on the YAMAHA OPL3-Sax Sound System.
  9. Click on the Resources tab and verify the following:
    • Input/Output Range is 0220-022F
    • Input/Output Range is 0530-0537
    • Input/Output Range is 0388-038F
    • Input/Output Range is 0330-0331
    • Input/Output Range is 0370-0371
    • Interrupt Request is 05
    • Direct Memory Access is 00
    • Direct Memory Access is 01

    If any of these values are wrong, remove the check mark in the Use automatic settings box. Double click on the wrong resource and use the up/down arrow buttons next to the Value box to change the resource to the correct value. Click on the OK button and change any other resource that is set wrong. Press OK to exit the YAMAHA OPL3-Sax Sound System Properties.

  10. From the Start menu, choose Shutdown, then choose Restart.
  11. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel then double click on the System icon.
  12. In the System Properties window, single click the Device Manager tab.
  13. Click on the plus (+) sign next to Ports. Double click on Generic Ir Serial Port (Com3) and then click on Resources. Verify the following resources are correct:
    • Input/Output Range is set to 03E8-03EF
    • Interrupt Request is set to 04
    • Direct Memory Access is set to 03

    If any of these values are wrong, remove the check mark in the Use automatic settings box. Double click on the wrong resource and use the up/down arrow buttons next to the Value box to change the resource to the correct value. Click on the OK button and change any other resource that is set wrong. Press OK to close the Generic Ir Serial Port(Com3) System Properties window.

  14. From the Start menu, choose Shutdown, then choose Restart.
  15. If the computer has no sound after rebooting, double click on the Speaker icon on the Taskbar. Mute all the volume controls and close the Speaker properties.
  16. Double click on the Speaker icon again on the Taskbar and un-mute all the mute boxes and close the speaker properties.
  17. If there is still no sound call Technical Support for further help.
