General Information: How to install a new ram module in the XL.
For installation you will need a small Phillips head screwdriver.
- Unplug the AC adapter from the back of
the computer.
- Remove the battery from the bottom of
the computer.
- Unplug all accessories that are plugged
into the computer. (External mouse, port replicator, etc.)
- Turn the computer upside down with the
front edge facing you.
- On the back corner of the computer you
will see a rectangular panel with a small Phillips head screw along
the bottom edge of it.
- Take the screwdriver and remove the screw
from the panel.
- Place your hand in the center of the panel
and slide it towards you. It will travel about one inch. Lift the panel
up and place it in a secure place.
- To the left of the panel you just removed
there will be a second panel.
- Place your hand on the second panel and
slide it to the right. Remove the panel and place it in a secure place.
- Under these doors are where your ram modules
are located. There are two slots (one under each panel you removed).
You will see a small plastic connector in each of the ram slots, this
is where the ram modules are placed. Locate the empty slot for the chip
you wish to install
- Remove the new module from anti-static
packaging.
- The ram module is a green circuit board
with several small black chips on it. Along one edge of the module there
will be several small metal connectors.
- Place the edge of the module with the
metal connectors on it in to the white plastic connector on the computer.
The module will go in at a 45° angle.
- Press the top edge of the module down
until it snaps in to the connector.
- Replace the ram door panels back on the
computer. The second panel you removed should be replaced first.
- Place the screw back into the panel, and
screw it until it is flush with the panel.
- Replace the battery and AC adapter.
- When you power on the computer there will
be an error stating that the CMOS Settings have changed. This is normal.
Press F1 to go into the BIOS and then Save the Settings and exit.
- Your ram count at boot-up should now reflect
the new total amount of memory.
