- Remove the battery and the AC adapter from the
WinBook. This is a must. Turn the Unit upside down and make sure
the floppy drive is facing to the right and is closest to you. You will
need a small #1 Phillips screwdriver.
- First remove the small Phillips screw locking the
floppy drive locking tab (See picture below). Slide the tab away from
the floppy drive and while holding it in this position slide the floppy
drive out and away from the WinBook.

- You should now see the Hard Drive setting in it's
retainer and the two screws holding it in place (see picture below).
Remove these two screws and set them aside. At this point we need to
slide the hard drive to the right until the 40 gold pins are completely
free of the socket connector.
WARNING: Slide, do not lift he HDD because lifting will bend the
pins

- After the Drive is out you will
see that the hard drive is attached to the retainer with three more
screws. Remove these screws and the hard drive will be freed from the
retainer.
- Insert the new hard drive back
into the retainer making sure to orient it as it was when removed. When
looking at the pins head on the screw tabs will be on the left side
of the drive. Reinstall the three screws making sure no to over-tighten
them.
- Lay the drive assembly back into
the cavity of the WinBook, do not try to insert the pins first, failure
to do this will bend or break the pins. Once the drive in laying in
the cavity, slide it to the left while lining up the 40 pins into the
appropriate socket. It should line right up to begin with and may require
a little force to make sure the pins are inserted fully.
- At this time the two hold down
screws should be lined up perfectly with the screw holes. It is normal
that the screw all the way to the left has the threads starting immediately,
while the screw all the way to the right will seem to fall into a hole
and will only be retained by a few threads.
- Lay the floppy drive back into
it's cavity and slide it firmly to the left until it clicks into place
and the retaining latch locks it into place Replace the latch retainment
screw. At this point the replacement is done and the unit is ready to
have the battery reinserted and the ac power connected if desired.
- If this hard drive is factory mastered the unit is ready to boot up
into Windows 98. If this is a blank hard drive, then you will need to
configure the hard drive to accept your chosen Operating System. Technical
notes for Operating system installation is available at the Internet
Web Site at http://www.winbookcorp.com.
