There is a very easy way to test the CD-ROM drive. You will need the Windows 98 CD or the WinBook Restore CD.

  1. Insert either CD in the drive and then shut the unit off. Turn it back on and start tapping DEL key during the post screen to get into the BIOS setup.

  2. Press the down arrow key to highlight Advanced CMOS Setup.  Press Enter key once. In the list you should see Bootup Sequence. Press the down arrow key until bootup sequence is highlighted. Use the minus(-) key to toggle the settings for it. Set it to CD-ROM, A:, C:.

  3. Then press the ESC key and then press F10 key once. It will ask to save and exit. Press Y and press Enter. The unit will restart.

  4. If you have the Windows 98 CD in the drive you should then see a menu that has Boot from Hard Disk or Boot from CD-ROM. If you see that menu then the CD-ROM drive is functioning properly.

  5. If you have the Restore CD in the drive then it should take you to the Restore menu. If you see the Restore menu then the CD-ROM drive is functioning properly.

  6. If you didn't see anything and it booted right back into Windows then the CD-ROM drive may have a hardware failure and you will need to contact our Technical Support department for further instruction on setting up the unit for repair. You can contact WinBook Technical Support at 800-468-1225 from 9am to 9pm Mon-Fri EST.
