Rail kitthis is the metal box
that contains the actual hard drive. The rail kit is the metal box that
you see when opening the hard drive access door. It is used to mount the
hard drive in your machine.
Tools You Will Need:
- A small Phillips blade screwdriver
Removing the existing hard drive
- Situate the machine as if you were using
it.
- Locate the hard drive access door. This
is found on the front of the machine toward the left side. This panel
may be removed by pressing in gently and sliding the door to the left.
This door should come completely off of the machine.
- Behind the door you should see a metal
box with a little handle attached. This is your hard drive surrounded
by the rail kit.
- Keeping in mind where you saw the metal
box, turn your machine over. On the bottom, near the front of the unit
you should find two small screws. These screws are approximately one
half inch from the front of the unit. Remove these two screws.
WARNING: PLEASE TAKE CAUTION IN REMOVING THESE SCREWS. BE SURE TO
USE A PROPERLY SIZED SCREWDRIVER. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN DAMAGE THESE
SCREWS AND PREVENT THEM FROM BEING EASILY REMOVED. IF THE SCREWS CANNOT
BE REMOVED, THE UNIT WILL NEED TO BE SERVICED TO HAVE THEM REMOVED.
- Now turn your unit back over. Locate the
hard drive again and flip up the little handle. Pull on the handle.
The hard drive and rail kit should come out easily
- Once the hard drive is out, you can lift
the hard drive out of the rail kit. The hard drive is connected to the
rail kit via a small ribbon cable with a connector attached. In order
to completely remove the hard drive from the rail kit, you must pull
this connector off of the hard drive. DO NOT PULL BY THE RIBBON CABLE.
There is a small circuit board attached to a black plastic connector
that covers pins on the hard drive. You must pull this part away from
the hard drive to uncover the pins on the drive.
- You have now completely disassembled the
hard drive and rail kit.
Installing a new hard drive/Reinstalling the hard drive
- Before beginning you should make sure
you have all the necessary parts to proceed. You should have the hard
drive and the rail kit.
- Look at the end of the hard drive. There
should be two sets of pins. The large set will have 43 pins. On the
bottom row of this large set there will be one pin missingthis
is normal. There is another set of 4 pins. The set of 4 will not be
used.
- The large set of pins will fit in to the
connector that is on the rail kit. These 43 pins will only fit into
this connector in one way. The pins are easily bent, so use caution
when connecting the hard drive.
- Once you have this connector attached
to the hard disk then seat the hard disk down into the rail kit. Your
hard disk is now ready to be installed into your WinBook LM.
- Insert the hard drive and rail kit assembly
into the drive bay on your WinBook LM.
- Turn the machine over and fasten the drive
into place with the two screws that were removed above.
- Put the outer cover back in place.
- Your WinBook LM hard drive is now installed.
