Installing MS-Fax:

In order to use Microsoft Fax you must be running Windows 95. You must also have both MS-Fax and Windows Messaging installed. Use the following instructions to add Windows Messaging and MS-Fax:

  1. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Double click on Add/Remove Programs
  3. Click on the Windows Setup tab (if you have an Inbox on your Windows desktop, you have windows messaging installed and should skip to step 6).
  4. Click on Windows Messaging then click on the Details button.
  5. In the Windows Messaging Box, Click on the check box to select Windows Messaging. Press O.K., and then press O.K. at the bottom of the Add/Remove Programs window. Follow the Inbox Setup wizard (see notes at the end of this WinBook Tech Article for guide through Inbox Setup Wizard).
  6. Back on the Windows Setup Tab, click on the check box to select Microsoft Fax. Press O.K.
  7. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  8. Double click on Mail and Fax
  9. Click on the Delivery tab and make sure that Microsoft Fax Transport is the first item under Recipient addresses are processed by these information services in the following order (This step is a good place to check if you try to fax and your message seems to just disappear. A different information service may be processing the message).

You can now fax from documents or from the Fax wizard. Please see your Windows 95 help file for more information about MS Fax.

Note: The following is a step by step guide through the Inbox Setup Wizard.

  1. Choose No to indicate that you have not used Exchange before, and then press Next.
  2. Make sure that there is a check mark by Microsoft Fax under "Use the following information services", and then press next.
  3. Make sure that the modem you are planning to use is selected under "Select fax modem" (There is typically only one modem listed), and then press next.
  4. Choose no for "Do you want Microsoft Fax to answer every incoming call", and then press Next.
  5. Make sure that your name, Country, and Phone number (or dedicated fax number) is correct, and then press next.
  6. You will receive a message now stating that the wizard is "Done". The information services MS Fax, Personal Address Book, and Personal Folders should be displayed.
  7. Press finish.
