WinBook LM Floppy and CD-ROM FAQ

General information: Mitsumi manufactures the 3.5" 1.44mb floppy drive in the WinBook LM, and Torisan manufactures the internal CD-ROM player.

  • Q. Can I "HOT SWAP" the floppy drive module and the CD-ROM module while the unit is turned on?
  • A. No, the computer must be powered down in order to exchange the modules.

WinBook LM Hard Disk FAQ

General information: The WinBook LM uses 2.5-inch Toshiba hard disk drives. The disks are all IDE drives, ranging in size from 1.0 GB to 1.4 GB.

  • Q. I turned my computer on today and got an error saying "Non system disk or disk error". What does this mean?
  • A. This error is indicative of a few different problems. The first thing to do is remove any diskettes from the floppy drive. Next, reseat the hard drive in your computer. Just remove the drive and re-insert as described on chapter 6 page 14 of the WinBook LM User's Manual. If this does not solve the problem contact the WinBook Technical Support department.
  • Q. Is the hard disk drive removable?
  • A. Yes, two screws on the bottom of the notebook hold the hard drive in place. The hard drive is behind a door on the front of the computer. Once the door is removed there will be a metal clip that can be pulled on and the hard drive will come out. An illustration of this process is included in the instruction manual on page 6-14. If you are still unable to remove the hard drive please call Technical Support.
  • Q. I got an error about missing operating system or operating system not found. What do I do?
  • A. There is a possibility that a hard drive can come loose in its socket, or simply lose its connection to the computer. Reseating the hard drive is the first step. If you continue to get the error after reseating the hard drive, please contact Tech Support.

WinBook LM Memory FAQ

General information: The WinBook LM has 8 MB of EDO ram on the Mother Board. Additional RAM modules may be installed in like pairs of two. The memory is standard EDO 30 PIN DIMM Memory.

  • Q. How much memory can be installed into my LM?
  • A. The maximum amount of memory on the LM is 40mb. The LM memory configurations can be found on page 6-14 of the users manual.

WinBook LM PCMCIA FAQ

General information: The WinBook Lm has two PCMCIA slots. These slots can accept either two type I or II cards, or one type III card. The 16 bit controller uses the Cirrus Logic PD6730 chip which is widely compatible with most PCMCIA cards on the market today.

  • Q. When I insert my PCMCIA card into the unit I get no response from the laptop at all.
  • A. The ejection mechanism built into the slot is very strong. When the computer is new it may be necessary to firmly insert the PCMCIA card into the unit, until the spring is broken in, to get a good seat.

WinBook LM Pointer FAQ

General information: Your WinBook LM comes standard with a touchpad manufactured by Synaptics.

  • Q. My touchpad seems to move on its own when my hands are near it.
  • A. The biggest culprit of this is static electricity built up in your body or on the surface of the touchpad. Ground yourself before using the unit.

WinBook Lm Ports FAQ

General information: On the back of the WinBook LM computer are serial, parallel, PS/2, external VGA, and port replicator ports.

Serial Port: The serial port on com1 is a RS232 9 pin port. The controller for the port has a high speed UART of 16550AN.

Parallel Port: The parallel port on the LM is a bi-directional port that supports ECP and EPP modes. It has a standard 25 pin interface that is compatible with most printers on the market. The bios default option for the parallel port is bi-directional, but has ECP and EPP modes as well.

PS/2 Port: The LM's PS/2 port will support either a keyboard or a PS/2 mouse. It does not have the capability of supporting both devices at the same time.

VGA Port: The external VGA port attaches to the 128 bit Neo Magic graphics adapter on the WinBook LM and will support up to 1024 by 768 resolution with 256 colors.

Port Replicator Port: On the back of the LM is a proprietary connector that allows you to connect the computer to a port replicator. (For more information please see the LM Port Replicator FAQ)

WinBook LM Power, Charging, Battery FAQ

General Information: The WinBook LM uses a lithium ion battery. This means the memory effect normally associated with these battery types is reduced on the laptop. Regular battery maintenance should include cycling the battery every 2-3 months, but it is not necessary every time the battery is used.

  • Q. What do I need to operate my computer overseas?
  • A. The only additional piece of equipment is a physical adapter from the standard 2-prong plug to a correct plug for the proper overseas outlet. The LM ac adapter can use any voltage from 100 - 250 Volts.
  • Q. How do I cycle my battery?
  • A. The battery cycling process includes the following steps:
  1. Drain the battery completely (until unit shuts itself off, do this in the MS-DOS mode)
  2. Remove the battery from the computer and allow it to cool for 30 minutes
  3. Re-install the battery into the unit and turn the computer on, allow the computer to fully charge the battery.
