Subject: Installing a Secondary IDE Hard Drive in an XP5 Docking Station

You will need the following items:

  • WinBook XP5
  • WinBook XP5 docking station
  • Standard IDE hard drive
  • ISA Controller card

Requirements of the controller card for the second hard drive:

  • 3/4 length IDE card
  • On-board BIOS
  • Non-Bus mastering
  • Ability to hardware set as secondary controller

Installation:

  1. Turn the master power switch off and unplug the docking stations AC power cord.
  2. Carefully flip the docking station upside down and place it on a flat, clean working surface.
  3. Using a philips screwdriver, remove the four screws securing the dark gray, hinged bottom/rear panel.
  4. Remove the hinged bottom/rear panel and set it aside.
  5. Remove the screws securing the silver colored bottom panel. Remove th panel and set it aside.
  6. Using your fingers, pop out the plastic panel covering the drive bay.
  7. Slide the hard disk drive into the drive by making sure that it is correctly oriented.
  8. Remove the slot cover from the ISA slot that will be used.
  9. Insert the controller card and secure it snugly with the screw that you just removed.
  10. Make the necessary connections for power and data. Connect the cables between the hard disk and controller card.
  11. Replace the two screws on the black, hinged bottom/ rear panel.
  12. Replace the silver bottom panel, taking care to align the screw holes in the panel with those in the bottom panel of the hard disk. Replace the screws in these holes, thus securing the bottom panel to the hard disk drive as well as to the housing of the docking station.
  13. Replace the hinged bottom/rear panel.
  14. Connect the XP5 laptop to the docking station.
  15. Plug the docking station in.
  16. Turn on the docking station.
  17. The XP5 will detect the bios on the controller card.
  18. Follow the instructions included with the controller card for configuration.
