NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

NOTE: The XP5 will not support drives larger than about 4GB. The upper limit is determined by the cylinders of the drive. If your drive has a Cylinder specification with 5 digits, the drive will not work in the XP5. If your drive has a Cylinder specification with 4 digits, then it will probably work. Please keep in mind that there are a large number of drives available that fit this criteria, and we have not been able to test even a fraction of those. Therefore it is possible that you will find a drive meeting these criteria that does not work in the XP5.

  1. Verify your present BIOS version. You can verify the version by looking at the BIOS information screen that appears on bootup.

The BIOS screen information will look like this:

PheonixBIOS™ A586 Version 1.03
Copyright © 1985-1993 Phoenix Technologies Ltd.
Reference ID WXP5_XXX

XXX will be either 509 or 80e

If your id line doesn't either 509 or 880e then call WinBook Technical Support at 1-800-468-1225.

If the reference line appears as above then proceed with step 2.

  1. WARNING: You CAN NOT use a Suspend to Disk partition on 2GB or larger hard disk drives in the WinBook XP5. Doing so will PERMANENTLY damage the hard drive.
  2. Power down the computer and remove the A/C power cord and the battery.
  3. Remove the large head screw from the bottom of the unit.
  4. Remove the hard drive from the unit. The hard drive is located in the front right corner of the unit from the operating position.
  5. Remove the rail kit from the old hard drive and install it on the new hard drive.
  6. Insert the new hard drive in the unit and proceed with the installation of your original operating system.
