NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

Important Terms:

Rail kit—this is plastic box that contains the actual hard drive. The rail kit's outer edge sits flush with the rest of the casing of the WinBook.

Tools You Will Need:

  • A small Phillips blade screwdriver
  • A Large Flat blade screwdriver or a coin

Removing the existing hard drive:

  1. Power the WinBook off.
  2. Turn the machine upside down. On the bottom of the machine towards the center you should see a large screw about 1/2" in diameter.
  3. Unscrew this screw. You can do this by using a large Flat blade screwdriver or you can use a coin (a penny or a dime seems to work the best). This screw is the only screw that holds the rail kit and hard drive in place. DO NOT UNSCREW THE SMALLER SCREWS TO EACH SIDE OF THE LARGE THUMBSCREW.
  4. To one side of this screw hole is a plate that is held together by some smaller screws (the XP's plate is held down by two screws and the XP5's plate is held down by three screws). We want to focus on the OTHER side of the screw hole. If you put your index finger in the hole where you just took out the thumbscrew and then run your finger across to the edge you will hit a little indentation in the casing. Another way of describing it would be a small slit in the casing near the edge of the machine. This slit is what you use to get the rail kit and the hard drive out. You can use your fingernail to pull the rail kit out the side of the machine. It should slide out like a dresser drawer. If you need more leverage than just your fingernail you can also use a flat head screwdriver, or even a pen cap. Be careful not to break the rail kit though.
  5. Take the rail kit completely out of the machine.
  6. Flip the unit back over.
  7. There should be four screws, two on each side, that hold the hard drive in the rail kit. Remove these four screws.

Warning: Be sure that the screwdriver you are using fits the screws properly. a poor fitting screwdriver may damage the screws. if the screws are damaged and you cannot remove them, the drive will need to be returned to winbook to have the screws removed.

  8. The hard drive is connected to the rail kit via a small ribbon cable with a connector attached. In order to completely remove the hard drive from the rail kit you must pull this connector off of the hard drive. DO NOT PULL BY THE RIBBON CABLE. There is a small circuit board attached to a plastic connector that covers pins on the hard drive. You must pull this part away from the hard drive to uncover the pins on the drive. Be careful not to bend the pins on the hard drive in the process.
  9. The hard drive is now completely disassembled from the rail kit.

Installing a new hard drive/Reinstalling the hard drive:

  1. Before beginning you should make sure you have all the necessary parts to proceed. You should have the hard drive and the rail kit.
  2. Examine the hard drive. One end should have pins on it. There will be a group of 43 pins and another group of 4 pins. In the larger group of pins one of the rows has a pin missing in the middle. This is not a defect.
  3. The large set of pins will fit into the connector that is on the rail kit. These 43 pins will only fit into this connector in one way. You want to situate the hard drive such that the text on the top of the hard drive will be facing up when the hard drive is in the rail kit. The pins are easily bent, so use caution when connecting the hard drive.

    Note:
The smaller group of pins is not used.
Note: If the screw holes on the rail kit do not correspond with the screw holes on the hard disk drive, please contact WinBook Corporation Technical Support at 1-800-468-1225

  4. Once you have this connector attached to the hard disk then seat the hard disk down into the rail kit. Your hard disk is now ready to be installed into your WinBook XP/XP5.
  5. Insert the rail kit into the side of the machine.

Note: It is easier to take the rail kit out when the machine was upside down, but it is much easier to put the rail kit in with the machine right side up.

The outer casing on the rail kit should be flush with the rest of the casing on the WinBook
  6. Locate the large thumbscrew that came out of the bottom of the unit. Reinsert this screw into the bottom of the machine to secure the hard drive in place.
