Removing the Existing Memory module:
- Power the WinBook off and disconnect the AC power.
- Turn the machine upside down.
- On the bottom of the machine you should see a plate
that is held down by two screws. Unscrew those two screws.
- Take off the plate. If you cannot lift the plate
out, you can flip the machine right side up and the plate should fall
out.
- Underneath the plate you will see two major components.
The square chip that has the word Intel or Cyrix on it is the Processor.
The other component you will see is the memory module.
Note: Do Not Remove The Processor.
- The memory module is rectangular shaped with two
long sides and two short sides. The pins on the memory module run along
one of the long sides. You will notice that there are two small plastic
or metal tabs or retaining clips, one on each of the short sides of
the memory module. These tabs hold the memory module in place.
- Gently pull these tabs away from the memory module.
When they are clear of the memory module, the memory module should tilt
up at a 45-degree angle.
- When the memory module has tilted up, gently pull
the memory module out of the memory slot at the same 45-degree angle.
- Slide the RAM out of it's socket. Put the old module
some place safe for now.
- If the memory module came from WinBook it should
have a small notch in the bottom left corner, you can use this as a
reference point for reinstallation.
Installing the New Memory Module
- Take the new memory module out of the plastic bag
it came in.
- Insert the new memory module into the memory slot
at a 45-degree angle. The memory module is keyed, so it will only go
in one way ( the "notch" from earlier ). Make sure that you
have the memory module seated down in the slot nice and tight. You should
barely see any pins or not see any pins at all.
- Once the memory module is firmly in place, press
down on the memory module. The best place to press is along the long
edge opposite the pins. The memory module should "snap" into
place. The tabs should clip back in, over the memory module to hold
it down.
- With the new memory module installed in the socket,
place the plate back on the WinBook, and put the two screws back in.
- Hook up the power and turn on your machine.
- On boot up you should get an error message "CMOS
settings incorrect." Press F1 to enter setup.
- Upon entering setup you will get a screen that
says "Setup has attempted to correct the following problem: memory
size invalid." Hit the Esc key.
- Hit the Esc key again and then hit the F4 key to
save changes and exit.
- Your machine should now recognize the new memory
and boot up normally.
