NOTE: You, the customer, are solely responsible for data security. WinBook strongly recommends that you perform a backup of all personal data contained on your system prior to performing this procedure. Warning: WinBook will NOT be held responsible for any data loss incurred during this process.

1. Remove keyboard lock strip

After making sure your WinBook is off and the battery is removed, locate the 1/4" wide strip above the keyboard (is says On/Off on the right). Place a couple of fingers in the middle of the strip and your right hand thumb by the On/Off print. Press down with the fingers of your left hand and pull to the right with your right thumb. The strip will slide to the right about a quarter of an inch. Lift the strip off.

2. Carefully Lift Keyboard

Check the spacing between the keyboard and the wrist rest. This will help you replace the keyboard later. Remove the keyboard by lifting the back edge (the edge away from you) and gently slide it towards the screen, but not too far as there are cables attached.

3. Gently Lean Keyboard Against Lid

Rotate the face of the keyboard up and away from you and lean it (keys to the back) against the LCD screen while you install the modem. Take care not to twist or crease the keyboard cables during the installation process.

4. Remove Modem Cover Plate

Your modem is located in the left back corner of your unit. Rotate the unit 90° counter-clockwise so that the left side is facing you. The modem plate cover is labeled tel. Without touching other components, use the flathead screwdriver to push the plate cover out and off the unit.

5. Remove Old Modem

If you are replacing an old modem, remove the retaining screw with the small phillips head screwdriver. Be careful not to drop it into the unit. Then use the flathead screwdriver to work the modem out of the modem jack, being careful not to push the modem jack or touch components of the motherboard. The modem will then slide out of the WinBook on the modem rails.

6. Insert The New Modem

Guide your new modem onto the modem rails. Be certain to align the modem plug with the modem jack. The modem is seated when the holes for the retaining screw line up. Insert the retaining screw and tighten it with the phillips screwdriver.

7. Replace Modem Cover Plate

Align the modem cover plate around the RJ-11 phone jack. Firmly snap into place, making sure the plate is secure and flush with the unit.

7. Position Keyboard Into Opening

Caution: Do not crease or twist the cables during this process.

Turn the unit 90° clockwise so it is facing you. Carefully take the keyboard off the screen and return the key-ide up. Insert the bottom edge of the keyboard back into the opening while still holding the keyboard up at an angle.

9. Tuck Cables & Replace Keyboard

Note: Be patient while performing this action. It may take a couple of tries to correctly place the keyboard. Be careful not to crimp the cables.

Place your left hand on the pointing device to keep it from popping up. Using your right hand, tuck the cables under as you lower the keyboard into it's original position.

10. Replace Keyboard Lock Strip

Situate the cover strip back at the top of the keyboard, with about a 1/4 inch hanging over the right side. Gently press near the middle, moving the strip to the left, snapping it back into place. Now start your winbook to verify that everything is operating properly. For AT Commands refer to the text file AT_CMD.TXT on the floppy disk provided.
