Subject: Removing/Replacing the Hard Drive in the WinBook W500 Series notebook

This article demonstrates how to remove and reinstall a hard drive in the WinBook W500 series notebook computers.

  1. Turn OFF the computer. Disconnect the AC cord remove the battery and disconnect all cables/devices attached to the notebook.
  2. Carefully turn the notebook over and lay it on a flat surface.
  3. Locate and remove the two (2) screws from the hard disk compartment cover. (Figure 1)

  1. Remove the cover. (Figure 1)
  2. Remove the single screw fastening the hard drive bracket to the compartment bay. It is not necessary to remove the other four screws at this time. Pull the hard drive up and out of the bay using the tab. Figure 2 Note: For reseating the drive only please skip to step 10 next. If replacing the hard drive, proceed with step 6.

  1. Remove the four (4) screws securing the hard drive to the bracket. (Figure 3)

  1. Remove the hard drive from the bracket.
  2. Remove the IDE connector and connect it to the new hard drive. When re-attaching the connector to the new hard drive, notice that connector is keyed for an empty pin. (Figure 4)

  1. Secure the new hard drive to the bracket with the four (4) screws. (Figure 3)
  2. Angle the bracket into the hard drive compartment and secure the bracket to the bay using the single screw as shown in Figure 2.
  3. Replace the hard disk compartment cover and secure it with the two (2) screws as shown in Figure 1.
  4. The hard drive is now installed. If a new hard drive was installed Windows will need to be reinstalled next.
