Disabling the Touchpad using the Synaptics driver

  1. First you will need to download and install the Synaptics touchpad driver. You can get the driver at this link: http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm Scroll down the page and click on the Win9x/ME English Only link. Download the file and install it.
  2. After you have installed the driver click on Start, Settings and then go into the Control Panel. Open the Mouse icon. There will be a Touch tab. Click on that tab. There may be a pull down menu where you can select the device you want to customize. Make sure you have the touchpad selected. If there is no pull down menu, then it will be located under the Hardware Tab.
  3. Click and highlight the Touchpad in this list then go back to the Touch tab. Down below there will be a check box that says Disable this Device. Put a check in that box and then click on Apply. This will disable the touchpad. Then click OK and close the Control Panel.

Please Note: If the touchpad is disabled, then you have to use an external mouse on the computer. If the touchpad is disabled and there is no external mouse attached to the unit, then there will be no pointing device. The unit will not automatically re-enable the touchpad if there is no external mouse attached. You would have to use the keyboard to manually navigate into the Control Panel and re-enable the touchpad.
