New Media Net Surfer v.34 28.8 Fax/Modem PCMCIA Card

General Information:

The New Media Net Surfer v.34 28.8 Fax Modem provides high-speed data transmission with V.32, V.32bis, V.32 TERBO, and V.34/28.8K BPS. It supports error-correction protocols V.42 and MNP 2-4, data-compression protocols V.42bis, and MNP5. When utilizing both features, your modem can achieve throughput speeds up to 115,200 BPS, while also being able to auto-baud to slower speeds. This flexibility allows connection with just about any modem in use.

Installation FAQ

Q. Does it matter what slot, upper or lower slot, the Net Surfer goes into?

A. No, it does not matter.

Q. How will I know if the Net Surfer is fully inserted into the unit?

A. Place in the modem into a PCMCIA slot - push the card firmly in until unit acknowledges it with two high tones.

Q. I am running Windows 95 and I am not getting any tones when the computer boots.

A. There are a few things you can check.

1. First ensure that the card is right side up and fully inserted. Eject the card and try inserting it again. If you are still not getting a message and you did not hear any tones, call WinBook Technical Support.
2. If you heard a single flat tone call WinBook Technical Support.

Q. I am running Windows 3.x and I have installed the Cardsoft software. I am not getting any tones when the computer boots.

A. If you have installed card and socket services, then you should verify that it is loading correctly. You should see the message "Card Services Installed" as the computer finishes processing the config.sys. One primary cause of problems is failing to add "Device=c:\dos\emm386.exe NOEMS x=d000-dfff" line in the config.sys. If you have further questions, contact WinBook Technical Support.

Q. What is the proper way of removing the modem card?

1. If you are running in Windows 95, left click on the PCMCIA card icon, located on the taskbar by the time, a box will appear that says, "stop Net Surfer 28.8 modem card", highlight it, and left click. Windows 95 will then report that you can safely remove the card, click ok, remove card, and your unit will responded with two low beeps.
2. If you are running Windows 3.xx, removing the card should be done when your unit is shutdown.

Communications FAQ:

Q. My communication program does not list the New Media Net Surfer?

A. There are a few settings that you can try:

• Intel 14.4
• Angia 28.8 SAFEJACK
• Acura 28.8
• Standard 28.8 PCMCIA Modem

Q. Net Surfer is listed in my communication program, but does not connect properly?

A. Try these extra settings in the modem properties:

Q: How do I get a better connection other than 2400 BPS? (My modem is slow!)

1. If you are running Windows 95: in the Control Panel under Modem Properties, you can change the Maximum Speed setting to 115200. This will cause the modem to always try and use the fastest speed the modem it is connecting with can use.
2. If you are using Windows 3.x or DOS, then you must adjust the speed settings in each communications program individually. See your user's manual for the program you are trying to use.

Unit Specific Questions:

Q. I have a WinBook computer, how do I know the Netsurfer will work with my unit?

A. The Netsurfer will work with all WinBook models except for the 486SLC.

Q. Why won’t the Netsurfer work in my 486SLC?

A. The 486SLC was produced when the PCMCIA standard was 8-bit. Since the Netsurfer is a 16-bit card it is not compatible with the 486SLC PCMCIA socket.

Q. I have a WinBook computer that will work with the Netsurfer. What do I need to do in order to get the working correctly?

A. What you will need to do depends upon your Operating System. WinBook has drivers for the Netsurfer card running under DOS/Windows/Windows for Workgroups 3.xx or with Windows95. See the following questions for unit specific information.

WinBook SX/DX

Q. How do I get Netsurfer working in DOS/Windows 3.xx?

A. You need SX-PCM (See Drivers and Utilities, SX/DX file area on this Web Site) and the driver diskette for the Netsurfer card are required to make the card work with this configuration. A sample CONFIG.SYS after installing PCMCIA support and the Netsurfer drivers would be as follows:

A.The Netsurfer card has been tested and does work with Windows95 on this unit. The WinBook SX/DX, however, did not ship with Windows95 and therefore it is not supported. To get the Netsurfer card working with Windows95 you will need to contact either New Media Corporation or your Windows95 support.

WinBook XP

Q. How do I get the Netsurfer working DOS/Windows 3.xx?

You may need to adjust the Resources in the Device Manager in some cases. The best results have been with an input/output Range of 0300-031F, 0320-033F, or 0340-035F and an Interrupt Request of 9, 10, or 11.

WinBook XP5

Q. How do I get the Netsurfer working in DOS/Windows 3.xx?

A. You will need XP5-SUP (See Drivers and Utilities, XP5 File are on this Web Site) and the NMCV34 diskette. Once you get XP5-SUP extracted to diskette, you want to run 8.BAT from that diskette.
