General Information:

New Media's Bus Toaster is a high performance SCSI adapter that lets you connect most CD-ROMs, hard drives, scanners, and more. The Bus Toaster supports up to 7 logical devices and data transfers of over 10 megabytes per second. The card usually comes with Corel SCSI software.

What your accessory package should contain

  • Bus Toaster SCSI II PCNCIA card
  • SCSI install diskette(1)
  • SCSI PCMCIA to SCSI II adapter
  • Cable for PCMCIA card to SCSI connector
  • Registration card
  • Quick start sheet
  • SCSI II User’s manual

Installation of the Bus Toaster:

*Do not install any disks if you are running Windows 95!

The diskettes included with your Bus Toaster are for DOS 6.xx and Windows 3.xx.

Windows 95 install:

  1. Boot into Windows 95
  2. When the system has booted to the desktop, insert your Bus Toaster into your WinBook.
  3. A "New hardware found" message followed by "adding software for your card" message will be displayed.
  4. When Windows finishes you should hear two beeps telling you that your card is ready.
  5. The Bus Toaster should be ready now.

DOS /Windows 3.x:

  1. Both DOS and Windows 3.x require Card services and Bus Toaster drivers.
  2. Install Card Soft from the PCMCIA diskette you received with your WinBook.
  3. Install the Bus Toaster drivers from the Bus toaster install diskette.
  4. Your Bus Toaster should be enabled now.
  5. Refer to the examples below of what the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat should include.

Installation FAQ:

Q. Does it matter which slot, the upper or lower slot, the Bus Toaster goes into?

A. No, it does not matter.

Q. How will I know if the Bus Toaster is fully inserted into the unit?

A. Push the card firmly into a pcmcia slot until the unit acknowledges it with two high tones.

Q. I am not getting any tones when the computer boots while running under the Windows 95 operating system.

A. Follow the procedure below.

  1. Ensure that the card is right side up and fully inserted.
  2. Eject the card and try inserting it again.
  3. If a message is not displayed, you did not hear any tones, or you hear only one tone when inserting the pcmcia card, call WinBook Technical Support.

Q. I am running Windows 3.x and I have installed the Cardsoft software. I am not getting any tones when the computer boots.

A. If you have installed card and socket services, then you should verify that it is loading correctly.

  1. You should see the message "Card Services Installed" as the computer finishes processing the config.sys each time the unit is booted.
  2. Make sure the line "Device=c:\dos\emm386.exe NOEMS x=d000-dfff" is located in the config.sys.
  3. If you have further questions, contact WinBook Technical Support.

Q. What might a config.sys file look like when running the PCMCIA support in dos/windows 3.xx?

A. The following is an example of a config.sys file:

Q. What might an autoexec.bat file look like when running the PCMCIA support in dos/windows 3.xx?

A. The following is an example of a autoexec.bat file:

Q. What is the proper way of removing the Bus Toaster card?

A. It depends whether you are using Windows 95 or Dos and Windows 3.xx.

Windows 95

  1. Left click on the PCMCIA card icon, located on the taskbar by the time.
  2. A box will appear that states, "stop Bus Toaster SCSI II card", highlight it, and left click.
  3. Windows 95 will report that you can safely remove the card.
  4. Click ok, remove card, and your unit will respond with two low beeps.

DOS and Windows 3.xx

1. Remove the card when your unit is shutdown.
