General Questions

Q. How do I contact 3Com?

A. 3Com phone number is 1-800-NET-3COM. Their Website is http://www.3com.com.

Q. I have a BNC network, can I use this card?

A. You cannot use this 3Com card with the RJ45 WinBook sells. A BNC network needs a BNC connector on the pigtail. The pigtail that has the BNC connector can be bought directly from 3Com.

Q. I need to find my IP or my Station address. How do I do this?

A. If you are running DOS/Windows 3.xx you will see the Address information when the 3Com driver loads in DOS. If you are running Windows 95, you can find this information by going to Start, Run, and typing in WINIPCFG.

Q. How do I get my card working with Novell?

A. WinBook does not support Novell. If you have the Card and Socket Services and the 3COM drivers, you have everything you will need. Contact your Network Administrator for further assistance.

Q. How do I get my 3Com card working with Windows NT?

A. WinBook does not support Windows NT. The 3Com card will work in WindowsNT and if you have an XP, FX, XP5Pro, or LM, you will need to download the latest drivers from 3Com. If you have an XP5, you may have difficulty in that the PCMCIA controller is not supported under WindowsNT.

Q. Is the 3Com card 16-bit, 32-bit, or CardBus compatible?

A. The 3Com card is a 16-bit PCMCIA card. Although the 3Com card is not a 32-bit card it does have 32-bit drivers for Windows 95. The 3Com card is CardBus compatible with the appropriate drivers. These are contained on the support disk included with the 3Com card.

Unit Specific Questions

Q. I have a WinBook computer, how do I know the 3Com card will work with my unit?

A. The 3Com card will work with all WinBook models except for the 486SLC.

Q. Why won’t the 3Com card work with my 486SLC?

A. The 486SLC was produced when the PCMCIA standard was 8-bit. Since the 3Com card is a 16-bit card it is not compatible with the 486SLC PCMCIA socket.

Q. If I have a WinBook computer that the 3Com card is compatible with, what do I need to do in order to get the card working correctly?

A. What you will need to do depends upon Operating System you are using. WinBook has drivers for the 3Com card to use DOS/Windows/Windows for Workgroups 3.xx or with Windows95. See the following questions for unit specific information.

WinBook SX/DX

It will then ask for the Win95 disks to copy files from. Insert the disk/disks asked for. After installation is complete, you may need to adjust the Resources in the Device Manager in some cases. The best results have been with an input/output Range of 0300-031F, 0320-033F, or 0340-035F and an Interrupt Request of 9, 10, or 11.
