Q. I put the Norton AntiVirus CD in my CD-ROM but nothing happened. How do I install it?

After inserting the Norton AntiVirus CD in the CD-ROM, double-click the My Computer icon. Locate the icon for the CD-ROM drive (it is normally drive D:) then double-click on it. Double-click on the NAV95 2.01 folder. Locate the Setup file and double-click on it, this will start the setup program.

Q. There is an option to create a Rescue Disk. Do I really need this?

We recommend creating the Rescue Disk. The Rescue Disks may be needed if your hard disk drive is infected with a boot sector virus, since you must start your computer using a boot disk to successfully remove a boot sector virus. A virus can corrupt Windows 95 to the point it will not start and also prevent you from reinstalling the operating system. The Rescue Disk would permit you to remove the virus and make the process of restoring your operating system much easier.

Q. Since installing Norton AntiVirus, every time I shut down or restart my computer my floppy drive is accessed. Why is this happening?

One of the options in Norton AntiVirus, and the majority or other antivirus products, is to scan floppies on reboot. The option is enabled by default. This is to prevent booting the computer with an infected floppy disk since this is a common way that computers are infected with boot sector viruses.

If you wish to turn this option off, you should double-click on the Norton Autoprotect icon in the systray (the area next to the clock on the Task Bar), then click the Options button. On the Autoprotect tab, click on the Advanced button and then click on the option "Check floppies when rebooting the computer" to clear the check box. Click on the OK button and click on the OK button again on the Autoprotect page.

Q. How can I keep the Norton AntiVirus program up to date?

Product updates are posted on the Symantec website. You can also to use the Live Update feature to check for, download, and install the updates.

Q. What do I need to do to make sure Norton AntiVirus will find the newest viruses?

Since Norton AntiVirus is signature based, you will need to update the files that the program uses to detect and remove viruses. These files are updated monthly. You can either download the files directly from the Symantec website (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html) and run them, or use the Live Update option. If you do not have access to the Internet you can order the updates on disk directly from Symantec.

Q. But, I have heard that Norton AntiVirus will find unknown viruses, so why get the virus signatures?

Norton AntiVirus detects unknown viruses through their activity or changes made to inoculated files. However, this is not as reliable as detecting them via their signatures. In addition, the signature files are needed to increase the probability of removing the virus without damaging the file it is attached to.

Q. I did not receive any manuals with the CD, how do I learn how to use the program?

There is documentation included on the CD-ROM under the Manuals folder. There is also extensive assistance available using the Help files included with the program. There is also additional information available at the Symantec website, www.symantec.com .

Q. Where can I get assistance if I have problems with the program or need some additional information?

When contacting Symantec Technical Support you have the following options:

Standard Care - 541-465-8420

Standard Care support is free for all registered users for 90 days from the date of their first call.

Priority Care offers two access options that guarantee faster service:

800-927-3991: A fee of $29 per incident will be charged to your credit card. This is a good option for error messages and more in-depth problems.

900-646-0007: A fee of $2 per minute will be charged to your phone bill. This is a good option for how-to, can-I, and reference manual questions.

Q. Do I need a separate antivirus program for the Internet?

You should not need a separate program. Unless you have disabled Autoprotect, Norton AntiVirus will scan files as they are opened and will scan compressed files as they are extracted. If you have disabled the Autoprotect option you can integrate Norton AntiVirus with your browser. See the Readme.txt file for complete instructions on doing this. It can be opened by clicking Start and then Run and typing c:\program files\ Norton Antivirus\ readme.txt in the Open box, and clicking the OK button.

Q. I found a virus on my hard disk drive and removed it. Is there anything else I should do?

After removing a virus, any diskettes you used should be considered infected until you have scanned them and verified that they are not. This does not mean that the diskettes are certainly infected since some viruses will randomly infect files or diskettes. It is a safety measure to prevent a re-infection.

Q. How could a virus get on my diskettes or hard disk drive?

There are a number a ways for a virus to be spread. A diskette that is used to transfer files from one computer to another, for example a file shared among co-workers. A file downloaded from the Internet or received via e-mail can be infected. Stores have been known to re-shrink wrap returned software and place it on the shelf. Some viruses have been transferred this way.
